Quite often I think that work wise I would like to go to an era when the only phones we had were office phones and car phones.

That way you would get the best of both worlds? #

When you are at a meeting/visiting a customer, no distractions.

But you still can call people on the go.

I really do believe that mental health is not positively affected by constantly checking phones all day, be it Email, Facebook, instagram etc.

Used to be worse than that. In the late 80's I think the $ & £ Apple pricing was the same when it was 2 dollars to the pound!

Even if the exchange rate was reversed the price would be too high IMHO. Apple have historically always set unrealistic price points. To the point of near bankruptcy. If MS hadn't bailed them out we may never have witnessed the "i" revolution.

Apparently they have made £ and $ prices the same, so that's another immediate 25% margin, thieving ba5tards. I'll stick to Samsung.

It doesn't quite work that way Benny, you need to allow for Shipping and import tax and duty.

In the US they will be brought in and the tax reclaimed to offset the manufacturing costs, whereas in the UK HMRC will kindly add their duty and tax rates plus clearance charges not to mention the shipping costs which will be compounded into the overall costs.

Just cos something manufactured for a US company at say $100 doesn't mean it will sell in the UK for £75 (Current Libor rate), it would mean apple running at a loss to import it's goods into other countries (What a shame :) )

£1000 is a lot of money for a phone, I paid about £900 for my 7+/128GB last year which was horrendous, but I figure that it's worth it if I keep it a minimum of two years and after three it would most certainly have paid for itself.

I agree. You can never escape. You can be halfway round the world and your phone can regularly ping with work emails.

I wait until something goes wrong with a phone (usually takes 18 months to 2 years) and then replace it with last year's model. Just got a Samsung Galaxy S7 instead of S8 and saved a few hundred quid. I suspect 80% of people use 20% of a phone's power and features. But then I'm going to replace my leased, new at the time, family car with one that's 5 years old and has depreciated a lot already. Just like last year's phone will have plenty of power and an HD screen and a good camera, a 5 year old car will have decent satnav, bluetooth, etc. Really couldn't give a **** about having the latest model that is just a tiny bit better and a whole lot more expensive!

Oddly I don't find this a problem. My phone does not ping with emails (although I do get several hundred a day) I subscribe to the work / life balance thing is not really a thing and more because work is part of life. I don't expect my job to stop when I leave the office but conversely (and here's the biggy) I don't expect my personal life to stop when I step foot in the office either....

I set my email to manual so that makes me check it every now and then rather than it pinging me all the time. I also get a company phone (iphone 6) and it is 2 years old and the battery is starting to weaken. I will probably go 8 plus next though as I want something a little bigger and more pda like. Will see what the reviews of the 8 and X are like before deciding though.

For something that is used everyday a grand doesn't seem that silly and in reality if linked to my contract which it will be I won't pay that out upfront. Both 8 & X have come very quickly and my 7 is only 12 mths old so I will wait until summer next year to upgrade.

This is the business model, which unfortunately for the true 'followers', keeps the fire in their pocket lit!

There is an off button

I often switch mine off or put in an offline mode when I don't want to be disturbed. I agree it is not good for society as some important old school skills are being lost.

And we're developing a whole load of new ones. This is what happens
