The scavengers run off the same spline as the oil pump. The complete oil pump setup then runs on a common 'jointed' spline with the water pump, which is all part of the same unit. The failure occurs at the joint between the oil and water pump spline due to water ingress through a small inspection hole. The water festers and rust runs rampant eventually weakening the spline to the point of failure.

Symptoms are erratic oil pressure, or more seriously regularly low oil pressure. If your oil pressure goes altogether, don't drive any further otherwise a £1500 pump replacement could turn into an engine replacement.

It affects QP's also.

Wouldn't a regular blast of WD40 through the inspection hole do wonders if that's the problem?

Cheers

That's sort if what I was thinking, probably too late on an 02 car for me. I will strip the pump and explain in pictorial fashion its inner workings and wear points

Look forward to it Matt....but again its an engine out job or can be done in situ?

This is a 10 year old car failing .....not a 10 month old car failing as found in 3200s.....;)

I can't remember exactly where the drain hole is on the pump when it's in situ, but I would have thought you could get some oil in there with the car up on a ramp. Not the easiest to get to, as it's immediately up behind the lower engine plate, but with a bit of flex-pipe?... Most garages have camera probes so at least they can see where it needs to be pointed.

If you needed to get the pump out you'd have two options, either cut through the plate to peel it out of the way or lift out the engine.

Although lifting out the engine sounds daunting, it's doable within a day or so - out and back in, assuming the garage is familiar with the Maserati engines.

Parts list for exchange (PM for details):
New oil pressure sender
New aircon pump SOLD
8 coil packs
8 injectors
secondary air pump
alternator
power steering pump
engine loom
Throttle body
Pipework
Fuel rails
Other bits just ask

All internals we have to assume scrap plus the oil pump as it was the cause of the failure.

IF ANYONE IN A VAN IS PASSING SWINDON AND COMING PORTSMOUTH DIRECTION WOULD YOU MIND PICKING IT UP FOR ME?

Aircon pump now sold to Hodroyd

Good to know Rob...as we know Maser numbering and parts changes can make this a nightmare

No Maserati UK Dealer had one in stock. I don't know whether that means it's a rare bird being one of the last of this model made, or if nobody thinks the 4200cc aircon pump will break. It does seem that there are different models about, mine was different to any of the cars at Autoshield and none were in stock at used parts suppliers, so I am lucky to locate one just in time..!! Grassyarse Matt..!!

Yeah...Maserati parts and supplies.....a bit of a nightmare, can't be careful enough and then you need to double check and then hope the UK network of indies and breakers comes up trumps

I did find a place on the net that re-manufactures here in the UK, don't know prices though.

Ok, managed to strip down the bottom end and block this weekend, and it was not pretty:

IMG_1631.jpg

Basically the oil pump went pop and it appears seized, this resulted in oil starvation of the bottom end (the heads are fine) and you can see that the silver white metal coating has been stripped from the main bearing shells revealing the soft copper below. This damage also extended to half of the small end bearing with the crank having light scoring on 7 of the 8 couplings, but 1 has a 1mm groove carved in it, nasty!

I will try and get the oil pump apart but its stuck at the moment, probably a massive internal failure resulting in the seizure.

Parts all cleaned and stripped, just have the valves to remove from the heads (waiting on Marios to let me know which type of valve spring compressor I need) and I also want to remove the 8 cylinder liners.

Basically, the engine is scrap due to the crank not being a economical repair as its too far gone for a regrind.

So Matt.......can you tell if this was just wear and tear over time, or a single failure leading quickly to the wear/damage mentioned?

Frank, it was an instant failure due to the oil pump ceasing to do what oil pumps do....pump oil.

Yes Matt.....but was there any evidence of earlier wear that you can deal, bar the complete instant failure?
