My new project

Been negotiating this behind the scenes for a few months now and yesterday I finally completed the deal, with thanks to Alan at Dick Lovett's:

50K mile 4200 GS engine, complete with everything bar the exhaust manifolds. Oil pump failure, it was running but knocking. Brand new Air con pump and oil sender on it supplied with a full engine loom too.

All I will say is that it will be an art project.

I might be willing to exchange broken parts for my used parts as long as they are visually undamaged.

Parts list for exchange (PM for details):
New oil pressure sender
New aircon pump SOLD
8 coil packs
8 injectors
secondary air pump
alternator
power steering pump
engine loom
Throttle body
Pipework
Fuel rails
Other bits just ask

All internals we have to assume scrap plus the oil pump as it was the cause of the failure.

IF ANYONE IN A VAN IS PASSING SWINDON AND COMING PORTSMOUTH DIRECTION WOULD YOU MIND PICKING IT UP FOR ME?

Let us know how it goes....any more info from DL about oil pump failures?

P

I had a chat with Alan and it appears to be the Achilles heal of these engines.

If it were me I would change the pump at 50-60k miles and forget about it. I believe the combined oil and water pump unit is £900. There is also a scavenger pump too I believe that has also had issues so £1500 to do the job.

I have spent more on a service or clutch.

I may have the pump looked at to see if they can be serviced/reconditioned.

When all you guys had left Dick Lovetts yesterday me and Miranda come out of the workshops see you had all gone but what I can tell you was what i learnt from Rob top man and we were on the same frequency these cars are more straightforward than we all think.
I had my workshop tutorial yesterday on a F1 gearbox clutch change.
Looking forward to mine more than you think.
A bit of controversy but keeping it in sport mode causes more ware.
Phil.

Any symptoms? Other than a terminal bang? ;)

The more I work on mine, the more I begin to agree. Not so sure about the emissions stuff, but so far I've been impressed by how simple it all is. Possibly due to being built to standard as opposed to driving costs down?

Your're going to have the fastest coffee table in Chichester. :)

The scavengers run off the same spline as the oil pump. The complete oil pump setup then runs on a common 'jointed' spline with the water pump, which is all part of the same unit. The failure occurs at the joint between the oil and water pump spline due to water ingress through a small inspection hole. The water festers and rust runs rampant eventually weakening the spline to the point of failure.

Symptoms are erratic oil pressure, or more seriously regularly low oil pressure. If your oil pressure goes altogether, don't drive any further otherwise a £1500 pump replacement could turn into an engine replacement.

It affects QP's also.

Thanks, Miles. That's mostly what I expected and will watch for :)

and there we were all thinking the 4200 was bullet proof, or that's what some have lead us to believe.... nice to know its also Italian and suffers similar catastrophic failures as the 3200 :)
