MC or Auto For GTS

Dear All:

I have posted a couple of time asking for advice and have benefitted from it.
I have had an offer accepted (trade purchase) and paid the deposit on a GTS which I am looking at on Tuesday.

Its an MC shift.

I will be using it as a DD, with a bit of traffic, but not city centre type jams/ slow moving etc.

From reading lots of posts it seems the most fun to drive, but some have complained of 'head bobbing'. I haven't driven it yet as its 300 miles away and I had to act fast.

1) Do those of you that have one find it ok in traffic etc?
2) Maybe a stupid question - does it have an 'auto' mode or do you always have to change gears with the paddles
3) Does it sound different to the GTS Auto in either normal or sport mode
4) Has anyone put an X or Y pipe on - and is it worth it?

I need to look at it early next week so would really appreciate some advice before I get down re: what to look for.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Iain - sounds exciting - let us know how you get on.
1 & 2. Yes it's fine, you can drive it in Auto mode and it's absolutely fine although it will wear your clutch quicker
3. Not massively but with the auto, the exhaust valves open after 3,000rpm whereas with the MCS, they open as soon as you press the sport button - even at auto
4. Yes & I have a brand new one for sale, it's the best mod you can do for very little money

Roll on Tuesday & good luck

As for head bobbing, slightly lift as you would with a manual when changing gear. Smooth as a baby's bottom.

I always lift when starting from cold as the gear changes are definitely more jerky.

Hi lincs:

Thanks a lot mate.
Well you made a sale then! If you still have it.
I thought whilst it is in getting work done at a main dealers (they are offering to do a crazy amount - hardly believable) I would have an x pipe put in too.
I will buy it - if you can give me your email or phone we can discuss payment and delivery etc. It would be good to chat about the car before I go and pick it up too.
VV exciting mixed with terror! (mainly at what my wife will do :) ) - its hardly 'essential' in most women's eyes.

Why are you selling the x pipe - did you change cars? What did it do in your opinion? does it definitely make it louder and add a little umpf?

Lets catch up when u have time.

Hi Iain,
1) The feeling of the shift is obviously very personal, and depends on previous experience as well. I recently bought an Auto, since I will be using it daily and it is a lot more comfortable in the city. In the past I had one Coupé, one Gransport and a Ferrari F430, and they all had a F1 manual paddle shift very similar to the MC shift (well, the Ferrari shakes your head a lot more ). It was a lot of fun, but I wouldn't drive them in daily traffic.
2) I personally find the auto mode of the MC very poor and only for "emergency use", i.e. stuck in traffic.

3) you already got an answer on the sound. Better to have the possibility to open the valves all the time (you can modify the Auto version to do that as well)

4) I have no experience on those mods, the car to me is just perfect as it is, but not all tastes are the same,!

Hope it helps, cheers

Hi Iain. Buy it.

MC is great and smooth when you get used to the subtleties of it. X-pipe sounds like this.

Have you driven either type of gearbox options on the GranTurismo? If not it's a brave decision to buy blind. Hope you like it mind.

Thanks for those videos guys- both awesome!
Love the strip on the bonnet .
Bob- I have driven the 4.2 , and although I felt very comfortable and loved the aesthetic, feel of the car, if I am shelling out serious cash- I want it to be an event. The standard one didn't give me that- I am hoping
This one will (I think it will) and I am not
Excited by a 4.7 Ferrari build V8 with paddle shift- surely
I need counselling?
I will find out tomorrow am!
I am sure about the X pipe, and keen on getting
The Neptune wheels done black.
I guess privacy glass is too much?
Otherwise will keep it standard
For the time being.
Don't suppose anyone will be close to Birmingham tomorrow early afternoon and are free to catch up?

I personally don't think I could handle an x-pipe on top of the MC Shift! Too much noise!

Do the valves still work with an x-pipe? Can you still quieten it down?

Vavles are on the back boxes so yes, exactly the same when you press the Sport button! The pipes give more noise and pops and bangs on downchange. I would go H pipe for a deeper sound personally.

Ah, now... we talked about this at the Christmas lunch. Lord Foghorn of Nantwich reckons his is louder with the H-pipe (the phrase "demented blacksmith" has lodged in my mind) but Jeff of FD fame reckons the H-pipe is without doubt quieter.

My GranSport has the h-pipe. I have no doubt it is louder than the X-pipe!
