loz, you've got me interested in this car again! where abouts are you based and would you be able to inspect it in situ? the car for sale is in croydon south london

i do like the colour combo and i cant imagine rectifyng the lights would be too difficult.

Based in MK and Croydon is well within my means , also have a bit of free time this week if its poss ,

Not wishing to sway you one way or the other , but just to put you in the picture , bought my 1st 4200 when it was 2 years old , Cat D with minor front end knock ( just wing headlight and bumper needed ) yes just that wrote it off ,very bizzare , couple of £K later , i had a good low mileage car which i kept and ran for 6 years , sold this year to a nice chap who took the car to spain , in terms of buying and selling i made a just over a £1000 , but more importantly was a cheap way to initialize me to the marque ,ive never looked back , and can never see myself Maseratiless

Lights are relatively easy remove the lense if your brave enough with a modeling cutting tool , then just case of getting them painted and re sealing the lenses , saying that prices have come down a lot , and not so long ago David Askew had a brand new black set available for £400 so food for thought

regards loz

Well, I went to see this car today, and met Loz for the first time who came to check it out with me. First off, big thanks to Loz, I hope you didn't think it was a waste of time... And cheers for all your guidance. Love your car also, sounds and looks incredible!

I would warn anyone off this car it's absolute junk! The repair is half done, and what is done is seriously bodged. Poor panel gaps, poor paint all round the car and most worryingly the inlet manifold had been smashed in the crash and, bondo'd back together and sealed with silicone. I've had 150000 mile ratty drift cars that look better under the hood! It also had all the under bonnet plastic trim missing... Bolts missing off the rocker cover, what looks like a buckled pully on the from of the engine... And that's just on the surface.

If the cyclinder heads have been hit that hard and the air bags gone off gosh knows what else is under there. Even if it was offered to me at half the asking price, I'd walk... It's one 4200 that would be better off stripped for parts to help all the good honest cars say alive longer. It really is a case of 'you spend peanuts, you get monkeys'!

So, moral of the story... Don't scrimp, invest... That's my plan. I've come from a culture of buy and fix, but this was on a whole new level

I'm not rushing, got a load of cars to enjoy until I find the right 4200. Hope you lot don't mind me lurking on here until I fully join the fold!

Looking at the ad again, it states that it is in excellent condition, in and out. He must be confusing the words excellent and excrement.

It was nice and clean underneath, at the back half of the car... But that was about it.

All it's got going for it is the 12000 miles on the clock, but that just suggests its been nothing but trouble and never gets used. I was most shocked at the inlet manifold... I should have taken a pic

Shouldn't this listing be reported to Ebay? At least as 'not as described'. Would help prevent this seller conning anyone less knowledgeable.

eBay wouldn't do anything, it's buyer beware and sold as seen with cars. At least with eBay if you win an auction and the car is not as described when you go see it for the first time, you can walk away... Sellers can't even leave bad feedback anymore

Yeps finding it difficult to get my head round how someone can leave a potentially 30K plus car back in 2004/5 when he bought in that state and think he was impressing someone , whether you intend to or not Maserati's do impress when there out on the street ..............not this one im afraid worst ive ever seen i mean that sincerely and that includes all he ones ive seen in David Askews yard

Doesn't matter where its advertised....trading standards should be informed......

JDM, You did exactly the right thing, can't ask for better guidance than from Loz and nice one Loz. Good rescue there. I have to say given the poor condition compared to it's ebay description I'd be disinclined to trust the mileage as well.

Cars is a difficult one though, once tried and tested and paid for the buyer has very little come back, hence the importance of an independent inspection. Regardless of the description anyone who sees the car and recognises its not as described can walk away.

At least with this being the first 4200 I've seen, things can only get better :)

The auction ended with no bids, unsurprisingly

Worth keeping an eye out for it appearing again, eBay will be informed of the facts if it does.
