evening chaps,

strange one this as when i test drove it, there was no issue and also when it went in for PPI at autofficina they didin't report anything of the kind. the only difference from when i test drove it to picking up is the fact that the original wheels have been rerfurbed and put back on the car.

to be honest once i picked the car up and drove home on weds initially there was no noise, but once i got closer to home i heard a clunking sound when putting on the brakes. is this normal when you brake??? once i pulled off again there was a constant knock knock knocking noise that picks up the faster i went. Drove the car again this evening at it's REALLY LOUD now. it's as if the wheel or brake disc/pads are loose and the rotation of the wheel/brake disc is hitting something or clipping something to give the really loud knocking sound. wont drive it again until i have to.

so - to that end anyone got any ideas as to what it may be or anyone had same issue? like i said it only seems to have happened once the black alloys were taken off and the refurbed ones put on.

i spoke ot Autofficina but they have open day tomorrow so earliest they can look at it is next sat. want to get it sorted asap as it's spoiling an otherwise good car.

oh lastly what psi should front tyres be? they look a bit flat

cheers in advance for any info/suggestions/advice

Low profile tyres.....do indeed look flatish.......esp if parked on an edge, 2 bar all around.

Clunking sounds as if something wrongly done, unlikely to be a stone caught between pad and disc.

Clunking could be a suspension bush......but you need wheel off to have a good poke around!!

agree P, i think when wheel was put back on they did something wrong. what i noticed also was that as soon as i braked and the car was slowing under braking the knock knock knocking would dissappear. no noise under braking, onlt clunking when driving

Almost as if the pads would seat properly under braking pressure....but then freed up when you accelerate......retaining spring missing, not put back correctly?

definitely leaning towards the pads not being seated properly - had this issue before on my on my other car. strange that changing the wheels could have caused this? perhaps it was just timing and would have happened regardless

Rs, tell me more about this plate lift? not heard of it? what is it? what are the symptoms?

Alloy calipers have stainless plates at points where pads contact. Corrosion under this plate can grip the pad and

stop it being properly applied (more effort needed / maybe feels sticky)
worse - stops it retracting (brake bind / pads overheating / leading to brken pads / damaged disks)

Great detail from porsche enthusiast

note corrosion under RH plate

First thing you need to do is check the wheel nuts are all tightened properly - if it is a loose nut check the others too.

Wow, that could have been nasty. I wonder why it was so loose. Anyhoo, all's well that ends well!

simple fixes, we like :D
Spent ages years ago helping mate with odd squeaking. Recent work to do or look at brakes on Ford Grandad 2.3 V6.
My dad sussed it out, wheel nuts on back to front. The flat side against recesses in wheel, with chamfered side outermost.
