As a serial convertible owner, I am surprised to see such little bracing on the underside; even my 1991 Golf had a pair of RSJs reinforcing the sills.

That feeble cross member under the central box may as well be made out of tissue paper as it will add little if any a torsional rigidity... you need very thick metal to prevent the body twisting between the front and rear diagonals.

The orange sections of the body work are added strengthening to the body shell of the Golf cabriolet, and even then, they had a roll-over hoop to add rigidity.

The below are the areas of reinforcement in the MK1 Golf (The darker grey are reinforced, or extra panels installed by Karman

The 2003 onwards cars also have some sort of rigid foam filling of the box sections. I was told at the factory that this made a considerable difference

Funnily enough I was watching a video yesterday of someone strengthening a convertibles box section the same way. Pouring some sort of liquid that hardened. I was sceptical at the time.

Dodge did the expanding foam thing to the “new” Chargers. There’s a whole industry cropped up for talking it out as it traps water and the sills rust terribly. 107505

Great video Annie. JayEmms videos are always well balanced in their views, and he had a great car to review which always helps :)

I think he is fair in all he does. I watch his videos to the end so that says something. We just need to club together and get him some decent shirts. :p

We see this on old houses where windows and doors have been installed with foam. It traps moisture and can lead to interstitial condensation problems.

My old business partner remembered when it first came in from the States. Apparently he and his mates filled a friend’s Mini with it. Bet that went down well.
