How to explain Cambiocorsa....

Never ever drove it in auto as it was like a dog on a leash, slow and awful gear changes.

In manual flappy paddle mode it was a revelation in S5 MDM and S6 mode. Around town you had to lift off and change in the sweet spot of between 3.5 to 4k rpm to make things that little bit smoother.

Engine wise was probably THE best lump ever made.

Miss it and like you would jump back into one but would want the mondial warranty on it as I used mine for lots of work and they could have potential to bankrupt you.

Not sure there are many that could disagree with us on the M5. Sounds like you enjoyed yours as much as I did.

I fancied the M6 as although I'm not sure the 6 was BM's finest design moment although it has grown on me slightly
If I had an issue with the M5 I had it would be the interior was so dated as it was a 55 plate pre-lci model. The 6 series came out of the box with a better interior. Also carbon roof and lower package would mean it must have a slight edge on the M5.

I have always had to take a view on all these kinds of cars as potentially ruinous and either you get lucky or not as to how much you have to shell out on them. I have not often lost money on these cars I've had so with zero depreciation I don't mind some big bills....not too big if I can help it though! However I am not well off enough to suffer 5 figure bills though. Only ever been used to 3 & 4 figure bills.

Amazing how we can talk about the CC gearbox and you can have Kick in the back changes and smooth changes talked about on the same thread.

Around town gears 1 to 5 in mine are smooth in sport mode. I don't need to lift merely pause or hold the revs as I flick the paddle to change up. Changing down can be a bit lumpy 2nd to 1st when coming up to a junction or round about for example.

If you floor it to pick up speed then I get the kick in the back. I just need to master the down shifts 3rd to 2nd and 2nd to 1st to try and smooth them out a bit.

I don't know whether it is because you have 4200's (with different software) but my GS requires no lift at any point low in the rev range to get a smooth shift.

Pretty sure mine doesn't either, but I was going to try it later. Certainly it's nothing I have to think about any more

As a new Spyder owner (with a brand new clutch) I've come to the unsurprising conclusion that setup and also clutch condition must make quite a difference to the way an individual gear change feels. I'm pretty happy with mine but maybe others wouldn't be. For the sake of comparison and pooling our knowledge this is what I get.

Normal: 1-2 change is usually a little slow/draggy (only compared to all of the other changes) when I first start driving and changing up somewhere between 2000 and 4000 revs. After a few minutes even those changes seem a bit 'freer'. Same in Sport but I usually use Normal anyway at that point. Above 5000 revs always a bit smoother and faster.

Normal changes once warmed up, either up or down, seem pretty smooth especially in the higher gears. Even dropping down quite sharply e.g. coming up to a roundabout say 5th to 2nd isn't jerky although clearly engine braking starts to kick in unless I'm using the brakes properly.

In Sport it's all just a fair bit quicker but unless I am being a bit ham fisted in the lower gears (e.g. suddenly booting it and changing 1-2 at the same time) it's still smooth. It works better if I don't try to 'match', I learned that in the first few days. I love the acceleration from the engine and going fast through the gears but tbh the last thing I would want is a sudden kick in the back from changing gear, I would think that would be a bit destabilising (but maybe I'm just over sensitive from my TVR days - no ASR etc.).

I guess it would be great to be able to play with the parameters without having to go to a specialist but I'd love to know what the original Factory spec was.

If the PIS point is correctly set, gear changes in auto are slow and gradual, you should not get any real jerk on changing up, or down..!! In Sport, if you are at full throttle, gear changes should be really fast and savage compared to auto, you should be in gear and pushing on within a second, no more, great fun..!!
