GTS Front Discs

Hi all.

So, just had my GTS serviced at the dealer and they said my front pads were 100% worn and the front discs were badly ridged so informed me I needed new pads and discs at a cost of circa £2500... There are 25,000 miles on the clock.

I asked them why the sensor had not triggered and the thickness of the front discs. They told me that the pads are close to wearing through to the sensor and the discs were 30.95mm thick. They told me the discs are 33mm thick new and the minimum thickness is 30mm.

A few questions:

1. I was previously under the impression that the discs were 32mm new - can anyone verify this or the dealer's claim?

2. If 32mm is the new disc thickness, can I get away with just pads or do I need to get the discs skimmed first (if I need to get them skimmed I may need new discs anyway as skimming will probably take 0.5mm off).

3. If I can get away with just new pads, do I need to get OEM pads (on the basis that they should wear the same part of the disc as the previous pads) or can I get uprated FD etc pads?

Thanks in advance!

I had my discs skimmed at the main dealer for £200 whilst I waited, brilliant. HR Owen North London (near Ace Cafe) have the machine, it clamps to the wheels so gets them dead flat.

Pads, EBC Yellow stuff appear to be available and greatly improved over the rubbish they used to produce.

PM sent

PS, dont believe everything some main dealers tells you, get a second opinion if need be.

Yes I'm thinking that mine may need discs and pads come service time in October so I'd be pleased to hear how you get on rd993

Whilst we pursue having 3200/4200/GranSport discs manufactured, we will follow up with GT/S discs as well. Watch this space.

My belief is that the on-board computer monitors brake use and to reset it, a code must be used to remove the warning. Seems this code comes on the disc box and is one time use. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I might look into the skimming option. If I have 30.95mm left (having done 25,000 miles) and I am right in thinking that they are 32mm new, I should have over 10,000 miles left in them even if skimming takes off 0.5mm. That's just over 2 years for me...

It would be good to improve the braking though. I don't track the car but even in everyday driving the brakes struggle with the weight. I had a few 911s before the GTS so I've probably been spoilt as Porsche brakes are spot on.

Are these any good. No price but the US company in USD are much cheaper...

as Matt said - GP told me that and mines done 27K, funnily enough it turned out to be a little over dramatic so said Migliore!

Good to see a bit of Miglioring going on with the Mas, Frank. What are you bringing next week?

New discs after 25,000 miles?! And £2,500?!

:omg:

Admittedly the brakes aren't brilliant on a 4.2 and it is a heavy car but surely discs should last longer than that? I hope anyway!!

My suspicions were first aroused after being told the pads were 100% worn and then finding out the sensor had not been reached...

Basically, as I understand it, although Brembo manufacture the discs Maserati are the exclusive distributors and the dual cast disc is patented so no-one else can make an exact replica which means Maserati can charge silly money for a disc that is not that expensive to manufacture... I am learning that there are alternatives. So far:

1. FD big brake kit. This comes in 2 versions: (a) the full on kit with 6 piston or 8 piston calipers for the fronts or (b) the lightweight version with no calipers but relocating brackets for the original 6 piston calipers. Comes with higher performance pads and stainless steel brake lines. Discs are 2 part oversize 380mm. They are cross drilled, vented and grooved. UK distributor is Noor of Torenno.

2. Giallo do alternative discs and pads. The discs are the standard size (360mm) so no need for a relocating bracket. They are cross drilled and vented 2 piece discs. The pads are higher performance ones.

Mine were skimmed and the pads replaced at about 18k, shortly before I bought it. I'm now on 32k and the pads have about 7mm left so still going strong.

How much is the Giallo set up as just checked their site and can see nothing under brakes for GTS?

I'm away from home so don't have the exact prices with me but if memory serves me correctly front discs and pads are circa £1500 (incl VAT) but perhaps Giallo can clarify?

That's still a lot of money.
