Unless it is an OS or image issue. Is it worth trying to get a copy of an image from a known good unit from another car?

Not sure I understand mate. I already took an image of the original disk, put an old Hitachi I had in off the shelf and it worked for a month. Cold snap and now that won't boot. Bought the SSD last week, put the image from the original drive onto the SSD and it is now stuck in loop boot mode.

So I tested the previous HDD I had put in and my machine can't read it so it looks like it died. I put the SSD onto the same caddy I used to clone it and it does not read it. The only thing I have changed on it is the removal of a jumper on the two pins. I had to take the jumper off as the ribbon cable on the NIT unit has to slide onto the pin. It looks like the jumper is for MASTER/SLAVE setting (based on an identical PATA drive). Would this prevent it from seeing it on USB or has it been toasted?

Don't say put the jumper back on as I don't have it anymore :D

From an amazon review.

"As another reviewer noted the jumper on the back of the drive needs to remain in place for BIOS to recognize the drive"

Any suggestions?

Any kind of jumper to jumper those 2 pins together will do. Or am I missing something?

I was getting originally that although the original imaged OK maybe there was some slight bad sector or block or something that is rearing its head again.

Risky but bending the pins together will do it...or jumper it at the base.

Does the connector cover this and stop you being able to jumper it at top of pins then?

If I put the jumper back on the drive works in the caddy which doesn't have the extra 2 pairs of pins where the jumper goes. The NIT unit ribbon cable however does have the additional 2 pairs of pins female end so I cannot install the SSD with the jumper connected as the ribbon cable will simply not sit flush on one corner. Am I making any sense at all here Dean?

Here is the SSD with Jumper on it (note it is the end pair of pins)

If the jumper is only slightly blocking the ribbon cable then trim or melt off the plastic cover on the jumper on the side you want to sit next to the ribbon cable.

If it needs the jumper then the only way it would work if not jumpers is if there was a CS or Cable Select when unjumpered. Not sure if I telling you how to suck eggs but the IDE bus will support two devices on the same cable/bus. The 1st needs to be jumpered as master/primary and the 2nd as slave/secondary. Or both are set to CS or Cable Select & the 1st becomes primary/master h the 2nd seconday/slave.

I guess if one drive it needs to be jumpered as master/primary unless there is a CS or cable select position.

What happens now when the drive is in the unit? Does it boot but freeze or not boot? What changed as I thought it had been working for a while?

It works in the caddy with the foil on as a jumper. It has the identical partitions but as soon as I put the SSD into the NIT unit and connect it to the car it tries to boot, Maserati logo, fades away with like a corrupted boot screen then goes black and repeats this ad infinitum.

Maybe the foil has been disturbed somehow but it's a major chore getting it in and out of the car, NIT and caddy etc!!! These things are never easy.

Mate there is only one drive, the SSD in this case. As I said without the jumper it is not recognized by my PC. As soon as I short the two pins it immediately shows the drive in windows and I can access the data etc.

Phil, I tried the pata ssd with a known good image and I got the same fading Masser logo and cycling. I reverted to the standard drive which worked and haven't had time to play again since. As you say, getting the nit in and out is a pain. However, I suspect the master/slave selection is achieved by the flex cable in the nit. IE, the jumper is in the flex tracking. I am also thinking that the jumper pins MAY be different between the HDD and the ssd. So when you plug the ssd into the nit you create an unwanted short. This needs to be proven by inspecting the pinouts of both drives, which I haven't done. Can't find a datasheet for the Zheino ssd.
