When you connect the NIT cable, it connects the two pins together, meaning that you do effectively have the jumper connected. Hence needing to remove the pins so the NIT cable is unable to connect them together

You sir are a genius. Happy days it is now working so both me and Moz now know the fix. It boots quicker than it ever has! :D

This forum rocks, Ferrers next time we meet you are having a pint.

Should have had a close up of the moment it booted up... would have made a great episode on the proposed SM TV!

Many thanks Ferrers - so it was the master/slave selection after all. Clearly, the CD is the master and the HDD is the slave in this unit.
Good stuff!

Well done to you all...having only a limited knowledge of IT I don't understand a word of your posts except its working on Forum Power which is the best thing.

Great work Ferrers & all. I concur that this make total logical sense to me as well. Most tech fundamentally is pretty simple. Man designed & engineered it so it sure as **** can fix it!

Great SM work once again

What I want to know. Is how they **** you figured this out!! About the master and slave being the opposite way round on the OEM drive??

Well done, I have to say much of this thread could have been written in another language but I'm glad the end result was a successful one

Because he clearly remembers the IDE rules about Slave Master setting which are redundant in SATA which has been around for years :D

Good work guys.

Is it quicker in general operation Contigo? e.g. playing music from it?

All we need now is to have a go at reprogramming it - it's quite close to being a good system. Would only take modest tweaks :)

Next test to see if an image from another NIT will work in a random device. Ferrers has kindly sent me one. Now I just need to replenish my stock of tuits. Watch this space. Although not closely

What we need now is someone with the latest sat nav loaded so we can share!
Moz

Late resurrection of the thread.

We do have 'latest' satnav images, all of 'em, and loaded into mine and with others too.

My NIT hasn't exhibited bootstrap cycling since summer last year after a long drive, until that is, just below Beaune on the way to Orange, she started to cycle, reset, reboot, logo, satnav page, GPS satellite status page, grey out, and reboot. Lasted about 15 minutes. Dunno whether temperature related, probably as it was hot last year when it happened, or tired bearings that get fed up after spinning on a journey in excess of three hours continuous as it was last year.

In any event, I'd have a go with this conversion to SSD, I've probably even an old PATA disc sitting somewhere, or cluge an old laptop.

However, although the thread was successful I'm concerned wrt to cocking something up.:-
1. The ribbon looks pretty delicate, and tracks easily broken, I'd hate that
2. I'd rather SSD it, but I'd really need advice on what to get.
3. I do recall the master/slave jumper gotcha, I'm old enough to be caught out on this ages ago.
4. I've a two year extended RAC warrantee, had load done on the car, but haven't bothered claiming. Perhaps I just ask Dicks to replace but can't recall the single item claim limit, but do recall that it was enough to cover variator failure.

Should I be brave and have a go? I'd need some explicit help.

What think?

First things first. I did the SSD conversion a good few months ago and just today it exhibited the Maserati logo, fading, then logo, fading etc etc etc... was off for about 10 minutes before it decided to jump into the life so I'm not convinced it is always the drive/SSD causing this issue.

1. It is delicate but as long as you take your time you will be fine, the main issue is getting enough movement on the cables/wiring loom to pull the unit out of the front or get your hand behind it to disconnect the cables.
2. I still have the box from mine, it's one of these (https://www.amazon.com/Zheino-Solid-State-Drive-Laptop/dp/B00QWZQ43Y)
3. It's all in this thread (I ended up cutting a pin off under advice and it worked a treat.
4.Speak to them it's worth a go!

Just to reiterate and add to Phil's comments:
- use the correct tools to pull the NIT out of it's slot
- if it hasn't been out before it'll be stiff and feel like it's stuck - just apply gentle continuous pull force and it'll give
- slide the unit out slowly to allow the cables behind time to untangle
- when disconnecting the cables, watch the square black one in the middle, pinch the sides to unlatch it, or it'll come apart - all the other cables are ok, but the big multi one has a lever underneath to unlatch
- when you have the unit on your bench, the flat flex cable isn't that fragile so long as you ensure the push-on connector is seated properly (this is the one that connects to the mobo) and you don't yank it and cause it to tear
- the SSD that Phil and I used, has the PATA pins recessed compared to the HDD you will remove from the unit. This means the solder points on the mating connector (on the flex cable) touch the SSD case. It's anodised (which means it's insulated), but it won't take much for that to be breached by a touching connector pin. So this edge of the SSD needs a strip of insulating tape (kapton or PVC if you don't have kapton to hand) applied. This could be why Phil has seen and occasional reboot (if the insulation is insufficient with temperature)
- Don't forget to snip the pins as declared by Ferrers
- then just be careful reassembling, and slotting back into the car

You may find the RAC warranty you have won't cover the NIT as the HDD is a wearable item. I may be wrong, but worth a check. In which case you have nothing to lose!

Be brave!

Grazzia Moz,

That's really more than helpful, smashing chap
It'll wait until I return from France end of June.

(by the by did you manage to load your discs in the end?)
