Change them if you want but I don't see the need. Just open up the insulation and squeeze in some silicon sealer. The next time it happens to mine, that's what I'm going to do. If it hasn't put the ECL on, the variators are working and new ones will still have the same wiring, so it will happen again.

just been looking at the diag No 22, looks like maybe able to clean these out - good idea with silcon - thanks Benny

They can be cleaned and sealed.

My were done by Felice Real at Sunnyside.

http://www.alfafiatservice.co.uk/

Don't be fooled by the professional website, they are a proper back street garage. Feli has been looking after our cars for about 10 years, and although his business is Alfa focussed, when I started talking seriously about a 4200 he explained he was actually trained by Maserati.

He does not have an SD2/3 but has said he can get one (not tested that yet)

I trust him implicitly to do what he can to a serious level of ability and when he can't, say 'Take it somewhere else'. He (and his 'boys') take a positive enthusiasm in working on decent cars :)

looks like I'm into this more....

been doing further research fron F430 owners and the oil in this connector could get to the ECU and cause that to fail. there has also been a part number changed (well for the F430) which could fix that issue

will get the soldnoid out and compare part numbers, one snag - how to remove the secondary air value next to the cover that is blocking access to one cover bolt ? Any suggestions only bolts i can feel is under the valve but from what i can see, not able to get a socket / hex in the space

I think you are over thinking this mate. IIRC, the ECUs on the 430 are a lot nearer to the engine than they are on the GS and I'll bet ECU failure through oil contamination isn't a known problem on the GS. If it makes you feel better, put silicon in the insulation on both sides of the connector. However, before you start ripping your top-end apart have a word with Autoshield, Emblem, etc and ask if it is worth doing what you are thinking of doing. Personally, I would be very surprised if they said it was.

well right bank cover is finaly off, took a while but easy when you know how... Chris that filter dosen't exist in a Gransport, I just have a bolt to cover the hole.

the top side under the cover looks very clean, no marks or wear on any of the cam tales that I can see.

Interesting, it's on the diagram:

Part 30 again

It's just under that bolt, if it's the one I think you mean. Or at least it should be ;)

Chris and others, I had replaced my variator filter awhile back. If I remember correctly its just under the cap that goes over the variator. Its brass and screws rite out. Also, for the plug end of the variator, put some dielectric grease in the plug socket before you plug it together. I have a thread on Maserati Life about this

Pretty much what I figured, thanks Lorenz :)

Did you find these variator filters in the end? Interested as will change mine next month.

Any chance you could take a pic if you do change them?

Cheers

the cam covers aren't looking great, the red paint is flaking, so looking to get these redone - looked around and seen VHT paint but isn't original, so looking to send the covers off to be done

I not sure if good idea to have the engine covers off for a long period of time - would this be OK ?

Maverick - will leave you question to LORENZ-GS have no idea
