Dear sage of the forum.

GF wants us to get a 'sensible' car.

Req
4x4 - she thinks we will get snowed in (daft I know but not worth any more arguments) when we move to the sticks.
2014 or younger
Not too big as Charlie is only 5"2 and only used to her Mini.
Auto - for me and my buggered knee
£24k or less and no we will not borrow to get something more expensive.
Less than 30k on the clocks

Current poss are
Volvo V60 R design
Disco Sport - although these seem to be just over the £
Evoke

Thoughts?

My current Dealership is Ford, Mazda and Hyundai Peter and I have to say the Santa Fe is a very good car and would still have manufacturers warranty with fixed price servicing.

We are also looking, but thinking another ML. I loved our last. From your list Disco, but would be the V60 next, had two Volvos but just estates with no issues. The Evoke is not for me, it just looks like it's been jammed under a low bridge!

Toureg looked at today... too big is her view.

The Korean and Japanese caes did not pass her view on 'Quality' although I have a big Kia on rent this week which is fine and we have had a few Hyundi as well over the last three years.

Not looked at the Ford or French offerings yet and due to look at BMW and Audi next week.

Honda CRV

A 4x2 with winter tyres will go further than a 4x4 on summer tyres

Yep...her Mini with winter rubber will be fine... but I have given up trying to win that one by explaining the physics.

Pug looks ok what is the trim like?

Just bought the Mrs a Vauxhall Mokka 1.7 Cdti SE (top spec fully loaded) and it is a real gem. Drives well and handles really well. 50mpg and they also do an auto version, cheap as chips compared to the other offerings.

Looked at the Lexus, stunning paint finish but she was not keen on the slash styling but inside was lovely.

Phil, had Mokas on rent and they failed the 'posh' test and were too bouncy and American like given they are re badged US cars. Also boot too small for two dogs.

PS we have also dicounted the Jeep range.

I had a look inside a 3008 in a car park in italy last week , I think they'll sell a lot of them , they've taken some styling cues from the new range rover range but at a more sensible price

I think your 24k would get you a newish demonstrator, edited from top of the range, didn't realise they went up to 33k

I was going to say Tiguan as well. How about XC60?

You might just squeeze a Disco Sport as we have been looking at them. Qashqai 2?

Audi Q2 we looked at as well. Perfect car actually but not cheap for size they are although should sit in budget.

You already have the answer. Volvo XC60 d4 awd in either R Design or SE Lux spec. I have one, love it. Although mine is not 4x4 however I should have bought the 4x4 version as it torque steers a bit when you push on. Love Volvos, it's my 3rd in a row and when I change, it's likely to be a xc90.

Tried loads of cars, can't see past the Volvos.

Its going to come down to the personal opinion of your wife.
I am clearly biased. But the quality and posh test you have mentioned point to one of your three choices.
There is no doubt the Volvo is a v solid car, safe, well made and good VFM.
I think most people are polarised either a RR person or Volvo.
The German 4x4s are a little overpriced and boring, French and Japanese don't look like they pass the prestige test.
You can get a well specced 4WD Diesel Evoque for 25ish but I doubt it would be 2014 or newer.
If your wife could live with a Volvo it looks like thats the best bet.

XC60 is a great car, well built and extremely capable, Disco sport is just an Evoke in a different frock which in turn is just an old freelander although the later engines are better. If you don't need the stance the Audi Allroads are good options
