That happened to me when KwikFit regassed my aircon and part pulled the pipe off the bottom of the header tank. Some guy came running in my office shouting that my Maserati was on FIRE!!!

I turned out the pipe fully came off after shutting down the car and p!ssed all over the turbos causing a steam cloud...new under ware was required!

Thanks for all the replies - i bought a new fan resistor as suggested - here it is, I dont remeber seeing anything quite like that when I changed the radiator last year
anybody hazard a guess at where abouts on the car it is.
I already asked eurospares why there are only 3 of the plastic cable shrouds, 4 slip on connectors (female) and 2 spade (male) connectors on the resistor, but they where not sure.

I've changed this on mine before. It is possible to tackle this from the top but you need to have very skinny arms and be prepared to be scratched quite a bit. It's a lot easier if you take the floor pan off and jack the front up. As Safrane says you'll find it central at the bottom of the rad. If I remember well there's 2 screws holding it in place and the hardest part was disconnecting it.

Thanks to all - part easily replaced, no need for a jack - garage is 3" higher than the drive, wheels inside = nose of car outside, 2 screws, 2 connectors - spent longer looking for 90 degree screwdiver, mine was definately knackered, the external coil, visible in the photo as a wiggly line was broken and the green insulation had perished away.

Fan now has two speeds as was rightly suggested - only the high speed fan was working resulting in engine overheating (or rather temp guage past vertical) before the fans cut in and cooled the radiator, now low speed fan cuts in before guage gets to vertical and all seems ok. As soon as the car starts to move the added airflow drops the temp right down.

A simple, relatively inexpensive fix well within the realms of any body remotely confident with a spanner (not required for this job) or screwdriver

That looks very much like an Alfa GTV V6 resistor!

Although oddly I think you seemed to have paid less than Alfa supply it for.
