Just fit a complete set of undersized shells, rebuild it, fill it with run-in oil and lob in a half teaspoon of fine valve grinding paste. When you eventually get it started and it could take a while as it will be a bit tight, let it tick over for 10 mins, drop the oil, put in some good stuff and away you go. It will run as smooth as cat p!ss on glass although you might find it clatters a bit over 1500rpm and it might get a bit wheezey on long hills (Standard Alfa). You can thank me later. ;)

That explains why your Spyder sounds like that I suppose :)

Well good and bad news today.

Got up at 5am and was at Duncan's by 8am, the boy had the engine stripped and assessed in under 2hrs, amazing.

Unfortunately the crank main bearings need regrind so I have left it with him. Its probably the best way to go and only going to cost a couple of hundred extra. Its a good job I got the head set, the head gaskets were rotten.

Apart from that, all the rest is A1, you can still see the honing on the bores and the engine has not been apart before:

And from the crank side:

Bottom end with crank removed, all good:

Left head, really good, will get a light skim just to be sure:

Right head, all good too, will also get light skim:

Top of the block, all very good, clean and rebuild only, good honing marks:

Its a shame I could not bring it home with me today but I pop up and get it next Wednesday, all being well and Duncan is going to fit the gearbox too as the thrust bearing is tricky, so another job he has saved me.

Once again, a big thank you to Duncan from Alfanet Services!

Not so bad then Matt; Duncan knows his onions for sure... Just needs a receptionist to answer the phone for him!

Update.

Not much to report really.

Engine is still with Duncan should be collecting tomorrow so things should start moving again.

Have new brake master cylinder as the engine cracked the old one.

Oil rad and pipes are miraculously ok. I managed to separate them all but it stripped the rads threads. They are at the engineers having new fittings made as is the wing mirror and AC pump which are both having some minor welding.

Got all my parts now including new bonnet hinges as one got tweaked.

Matt.

Welcome to stay here if you wish as long as you don't want to bring the engine in the house!
