Brakes - a quick question

Hi guys

I took delivery of my Brembo brake discs here in sunny Oz today - superb given they only left the UK at 1410hrs on Monday afternoon! Cost over here? $3,400, to me delivered for $1150 (and that includes 230GBP for postage as they do weigh a bit!!) so great kudos once again for the SM Forum!!!!

Anyway, I've looked but couldn't find it again but I kinda remember someone saying when you get them and pre-installation you should 'paint the bell housing with cold gal' or something. It looks wonderfully shiny and of the same metal as the actual disc so is my memory failing me and I made that bit up about painting it or did I read that?? Also, is it an absolute must or have some people installed them without painting them?

Cheers

Yes.....as its bright shiney bare metal, in UK at least they go rusty very quickly, looks so naff, can't remember whether people used a dull hammerite type finish or what, but yes, do paint before putting on

Needs to be heat resistant past and just the hub that needs painting as the disc will be rubbed each time you use the brakes.

OK cool thanks guys. Excuse my ignorance but is this 'cold galvanised' stuff people have spoken of heat resistant or does anyone have any specific suggestions other than cold gal??

I think it would be wise to read up on CG before using it, and plenty of info is available via Google.

If you decide to paint you might consider 'Sperex VHT' for which the Oz importer appears to be Speco (they might be good for advice anyway):

i painted my disks with some VHT paint and it was not hard to do or expensive, its starting to fade now, 18 months on, but its better than leaving them. I am not at home so don't have the photos of the paint job, or the exact pain I used, I will post tomorrow. i think my avatar shows the paint job a bit!

OE discs are painted with a silver heat resistant paint and they last very well. Brembo's have no paint on them and can rust up quite quickly, although it is not detrimental to the disc working, just looks naf. Any colour will do Silver, Gold etc, the choice is yours. This one I think is about £8. for a 250ml tin, a guide..!!

Gents

As ever the answer to questions appear quick smart so thanks very much for your efforts!!

Now if you could supply me with the numbers for this week's lottery I'd be even happier :)

May also be worth mentioning not to paint the part of the disc where the wheel meets it...
Most owners check their nuts are torqued on a fairly regular basis, which is good...
but there have also been a number of loose nut reports,
having paint on the whole front of the disc does not help,
Couple of pics showing mas and fez discs:

Bumping this thread.
It seems most people are using a solid coloured paint on their hubs.

I would like to use a clear coat because I like the shiny new finish on my just installed brembo 550 rotors.
I didn't think about painting them until after they were fitted unfortunately so a bit more work now needed.

But I would like to know if anyone has successfully used a hight temp resistant clear coat and if so what brand?

Cheers.

Hi George,
I use the grey as it matches the original finish, the pics I posted earlier are of discs as delivered new from the supplier.
The paint is a little thin though, and does not have a smooth finish, so over little time, it soon discolors... also because of heat.
I had some 2k paint mixed which has a hardner and is high temp resistant, although this is in the same grey rather than clear,
it will have a slight sheen and am hoping this will last longer.
I will be doing my discs sometime in the next few weeks and will post up a couple of pics with the new paint.
Clear does sound like a nice idea, am sure a paint shop could mix a high temp resistant version.

As far as I know guys the grey finish is zinc coating. I bought a spray can of grey zinc coating from Halfords and all is superb. Easy to use with great coverage and very good finish.

Would imagine zinc is used as a rust inhibitor, but I find it still discolors due to heat, hence me trying the 2k vht.

A heat resistant paint in either grey, or silver should do the job, that's the only issue with the Brembo discs over the OE..!!

I see what you mean Robert on Brembo vs OE for the maser...of course we are talking about Ferrari 550 discs as an alternative for the 4200, but for my 550 the Brembos are OE!
