4200 Coupe GT flywheel

Hey folks, my 4200 Coupe GT (manual) is in to have the clutch done at the moment. I bought the clutch, bolts, bearings etc. but took a gamble on not buying a flywheel, and of course, that has turned out to be a bit of a mistake...

So, tomorrow morning first thing I'm going to call Eurospares, and/or Ross at Meridien to see if they can 24hr courier one up to Dundee.
If neither of them have one in stock, where should my next call be to?

On another note here is the old clutch (with the new one in the background). Given the visible lettering on the friction material, I presume I'm right in thinking this clutch isn't all that worn!?
I'm getting the impression the previous owner has changed the clutch when really the car needed a flywheel..

What were the symptoms ?
Had the flywheel been machined and too much taken off ?
As you say the clutch doesn't look old looking on my phone.

That old plate looks in pretty good condition. What condition is the pressure plate and spring?

Symptoms were high biting clutch and judder on take off, which we assumed to be worn clutch.
In hindsight, I think the clutch was perhaps sitting a little low, which I'm thinking now probably means some air in the system, but of course that wouldn't cause the judder, the flywheel was likely causing that of course...

Comparing the 2 clutches, the old one looks slightly dirtier, the springs are all nice and tight.
The flywheel clearly has some burn marks on the surface and is uneven to touch.
It doesn't look like it's previously been machined, but we don't know of anyone local that can machine it either.

Try to have an expert really set the KISS/PIS point and engagement RPM electronically to the correct values first! This makes ALL the difference.
I just had this done after having rough jumps/skids when starting in 1st gear or reversing and feeling the clutch not really engaging correctly.
The mechanic told me (even though my 4200 was all official Maserati serviced) nobody ever seemed to adjust the clutch values correctly.
Now, even though my clutch says its all used up (with a 100% reading!!), it now drives as smooth a new car. Incredible.

You could try Scuderia Car Parts too

Thanks, that's the clincher. Looked the part up, website says in stock, I confirmed via their live chat and then Ritesh from their team called me within a couple of minutes.
Great service, especially at quarter to ten at night!
Fingers crossed it arrives for Friday!

I think the answer to this is, it's a manual not a cambiocorsa :)

Is it stuck on the lift whilst waiting for the flywheel ?
If so this is costing the business money unless he's invoicing you for the time it's on there waiting.
Just saying and that's why many Garages don't fit customer supplied parts.

Yes, it's currently stuck on the lift. They anticipated it taking 3 days due to potential for issues, so I'm hoping for Friday arrival so they can start sticking it back together.
I agree on the customer parts too, but the garage is run by a friend, and he is perhaps a little too flexible for me. As he said, they can most probably bolt the gearbox back in sans torque tube and get it into a position where it can be pushed off the ramp if need be, but obviously that's not an ideal situation.
They were looking into a machine shop to resurface the flywheel, but that was looking like 1 hour+ drive each each way, plus waiting time, at which point, buying a new one seemed to make a lot more sense to me.
They are servicing the car too, so can clean the brakes up, fluid changes etc. and do tyre swapping today whilst the car is on the ramp, so it's not entirely wasted time.

The price seems to be much of a muchness, maybe 10 or 15 different.
I’m happy with what I paid compared to the others around.

Does this mean you have a slightly used second hand clutch for a manual sitting about gathering dust then....Wanna sell it ?
Or do we think the compromised flywheel will have passed on damage to the clutch parts...?
cheers

I do have a manual clutch that looks only slightly used, though I haven’t really decided what to do with it. What do you think would be a fair price?

In hindsight, I should have got the verniers on the new one to compare thickness or something

tbf, with much of the cost being labour...it'd have to be quite alot cheaper than a new one to make it worth the prospect of finding yourself repeating the process prematurely...
Not sure...Im not that 'with it' on costs. Might want to keep it as a spare yourself too, I imagine ?

I agree with this point. Can't speak globally, but here people try and sell the used clutches for $1k-$1500, but a new one only costs $2k. IMO it would need to be like $500 for me to risk the labour twice.

I heard from Marios that there are still some 'dodgy' new manual clutches out there so when/if the time comes for me to replace mine I think I will pay the extra to get one fitted with a guarantee!

My understanding of this is that it was principally confined to a 'bad batch', and as such, it would identifiable by the batch number.....

I take it there is no history in the car's file that indicates the mileage at which it was fitted... As this would indicate it's condition to some degree, it would also have pointed to your 'issue' being something other than clutch wear....
