wording of the ad would suggest very little service history as well ...
4200 don't seem to sell at the moment so with the added stigma of a Cat D and - maybe - incomplete history, then in my humble opinion, it is not that well priced at £12,750 ....

but of course I am on the prospective buyer camp so you would expect me to say that :)

I find 4200 very hard to value realistically ...

This car has been on and off eBay for some time, I saw it months ago when I was looking. Personally I think it is well overpriced for a Cat D car, even though it might be a good repair on the surface.

Well as its my car I think its priced ok with a bit of manouvere room.

New clutch, gearbox and cats 3000 miles ago at a cost of £13k

If it wasn't cat D, with the mileage and clutch gearbox etc it would be 16k min.

It has main dealer history up to circa 18k miles, has only covered 3000 miles in the last 5 years and has been serviced twice in that time.

The car has only been advertised for sale a week ago by me on ebay. Not too bothered if I sell, looks great next to the spyder!

As for been " well overpriced" I can't agree....a 70k miles cat c car would be circa 8.5-9k, probably needing money spending on it and not far off a clutch.....my car needs nothing.

Happy hunting.

Cat D car is worth 20-25% less than retail.

Cat C about 30% less

Cat cars carry a stigma but if repaired correctly should be worth the same as the retail car.

More and more cars are being written off for repairs that used to be simple fixes.

The reason for this are the claims agents that step in and get you hire cars and negotiate compensation and charge massive fees for the privilege.

So insurance companies cut their losses and just write them off, as when you accept the settlement they stop having pay out to the claims agents.

Give it another 10 years and I think CAT cars will become common place.

umm, nice car, like the interior.

In my opinion for a cat D its a little salty on price. I understand that generallysCat D normally suggests just panel damage, however in the trade generally a write off is deemed to be worth closer to half its retail value. As a private buyer I would say this maser is worth what you deem it to be in accordance with the extent of the damage and quality of the repair.

If things were'nt so unsettled in my workplace at the moment I WOULD be tempted. Nice find P :)

Cat cars are a difficult one, as they're being categorised so much more readily because of the sorry state of the insurance market. For sure it makes re-sale more difficult, and brings resale value under scrutiny (a moving feast at the best of times), but if it can be demonstrated beyond doubt that the repair was top notch, I wouldn't be unduly spooked. I guess this is where the extra effort is required. Just thinking about it quickly, there are two forum members whose cars I wouldn't think twice about buying - because both were demonstrably repaired to absolute A1 standard.

As ever...horses for courses.....if the inspection plus reports hold up...then might be a decent buy for someone.....interested to see how it goes

Just to add some weight and p[erspective to this , just sold my 52 plate 4200 earlier this year , Cat D back in 2006 and repaired by me , full gransport body kit , gransport steering rack and steering wheel , tubi exhausts for and Only 37K miles all for £10K , so my view that its a tad overpriced and worth £10K ish

If my car is worth £10k it means non cat d its worth £13k ish working on the 25/30 % theory......show me a 20000 mile car of any age for 13k, there arnt any. I've just given over 20k for my 14000 mile Spyder, which might be a touch expensive, but where can you find another?

These cars are not easy to put a proper value on, they are worth what someone will pay really, but when unrepaired 60k miles salvage is 7k in the trade, any 4200 really should be £10k minimum if its a nice car.

Its what the market will bear Matt , obviously its just my humble opinion , if you stick it out you may well get £11K ish, but its the wrong time of year for supercars and large cc cars are not selling well generally , my assumption is based that you want to move it on reasonably quickly not have it like so many others hanging around for months on end

best of luck

Thanks Loz, I would agree the market is a strange one at the minute, I was involved in the specialist car market for 25 years up until recently, including running Ferrari and Aston Martin dealerships, and there is nothing more certain than opinions count, so many variables.

In fact for the last twelve months I didn't subscribe to glasses guide anymore, so wide of the mark I found it.

For sure the guides are pretty much out of the window at the moment regards anything that isn't run of the mill , financial cliimate , area , price of petrol , budget looming etc all come into play with the used specialist Market, best of luck as i say

A Cat D car that has covered 3000 miles in the last 5 years and been serviced twice in that time is not very appealing if I'm honest. I'd want to know why it has covered such little mileage as it suggests a problematic car. Even more so if it's had a £13k bill so early on in it's life.

Loz and i went to see a Cat D 12k mile 4200 recently which turned out to be a complete lemon, I wouldn't have even given £4k for that one, and yes... it really was a 12k mile car!

A car that has been used regularly and consistently and proven it's reliability is more appealing to me... just my 2p :) Good luck with the sale though, there is a buyer for every car out there

My car is not problematic and open to any inspection. It was part of an 8 car collection hence the mileage. It had a slight bearing noise in the gearbox so everyhing was replaced, sign of good ownership id say!

As for the 8k car, you get what you pay for, was never going to be decent for that, was it?

This seems to be the chap http://www.hamworthybodyshop.co.uk/hamworthy-body-shop-services.html

after a little bit of research , so possibly a good repair , but thats what i really dont like and im always wary when Cat cars are done for proffit rather than for passion , corners tend to be cut

be very wary if you buy a repaired cat car unless the before and after photo;s are available,
