And the other truth (for me anyway - please done beat me up together) is that had a 458 or California or F12 been available for 100k new I would be in one of those right now. Ok maybe not the California......

I concur.
Price was certainly a big contributing factor in my purchase of a Maserati.
That said, I have always thought the phrase 'poor mans Ferrari' was actually used more as a compliment towards things like the Fiat Coupe or Hyundai Coupe rather than an insult to higher end cars.

My FF will when it arrives

I *think* I prefer the sight and sound of the GTS. But I'd not chuck an FF in that granitey colour out of my dream garage, that's for sure. Thing is, it's a far newer car than mine and would cost 2 or 3x as much to buy.

So perhaps a Maserati really is a poor man's Ferrari..? No. I still think they're adequately different.

Not sure what your point is Lee? Are we excluding older Ferrari's in this discussion?

Mainly my point was that I didn't notice that he had had one, old or otherwise.
The remark about the 1800s was just a jovial nothing comment, as I do not believe that people spit at Ferraris or generally hate them when they see them, now or in the past. I have encountered some hostility with regards Ferraris and Lamborghinis etc but only really directed at me by anonymous internet posters who (I suspect) can't afford them and therefor think anyone who has one is bragging and flashy.
I imagine that the same type of people would have a similar view of Maseratis.
Like I said, I am just surprised there is so much of the anti Ferrari nonsense on here.

I sort of arrived at the same conclusion using different phraseology. For the budget I had in mind the Maserati was a much newer, more modern vehicle and therefor more enjoyable to drive everyday. The Ferrari I had last was a 360 Modena, which is about as new as I would get with the money I spent on the GranTurismo. I drove it as a daily and it was plenty of fun and I did around 12000 miles in it over about 14 months but it was a very old fashioned drive.
I suppose I could have stretched to a 612 but I think the GT is so much nicer looking.
I only really need two seats, so if I could be in a 458 then I would be - but I am too poor.

I think that's the point. They are different. The Maser (I mean proper masers not diesel suit shifters) are the best value for money out there. Mostly Ferrari tech with extra practicality perfect balance. Price isn't the issue it's all about choice.

Trip to Italy in 430 or a GT MC...no contest....maser every time

Not sure why im going on about the F12, 458 etc as tbh if I had the money, I would be going to get a Huracan right now. My immediate neighbour has a white Gallardo and I love it to bits. The sheer sense of occasion when you drive it is awesome.

Ok ill crawl back into my box now....

Hi guys,

I've had a couple of people call my Maserati a 'poor man's Ferrari'. Does anyone have a clever response that I can use that will put these people in their place? Poor man's Ferrari? Seriously?

All suggestions gratefully accepted.

Merrian
Fight fire with fire.

Smile,
Ask them what they drive.
Laugh and Respond, "that's a poor mans car!"
Walk away.

Cheers Wattie

Agreed, the 612 is a cracking car but I far prefer the look of the GT. If prices were on a par - and they're not that far adrift - I'd still go for the GT.

Mate, I'm certainly not anti-Ferrari! I'd have another one in a heartbeat. I was speaking from personal experience, having seen it happen in Leeds, on more than one occasion. Very sad to see.

I have only ever had compliments on the Maserati - at petrol stations, when I pull up in car parks etc. I reckon Blondie's CEO is just having a little fun pulling her leg. I think he is most probably a tad envious and this comes out with his slightly negative comment. I'd tease him a little with this Blondie!! Forza Maserati!

p.s. although I understand some of the comments around Ferraris, I would absolutely love to have one, maybe a 599 or Cali like Barrie's... one day......!
