2010 grancabrio, when I start it from cold it's noisy as fook, obviously valves open, much to neighbours dismay especially on a Sunday morning! Is there an option to shut it up? When its warm its quiet, can you make it loud? Solution probably to put exhaust valves on a separate switch......

Are your valves seized open? My GTS starts with valves shut.

All Granturismo start with the valves open for a few seconds, that's why they 'bark' on startup.
After a second or two the vacuum from the engine closes them and then it's goes quieter.
When you press sport, they open again, to varying degrees/revs depending on what model it is.

Also on cold start the secondary air system pumps extra air in to heat up the cats, that's why it's particularly noisy when cold even with valves closed.
It is possible to give it a gentle rev to get if off of 'choke' quicker and it'll be quieter.


As said above, have you checked that your valves are moving?

Should only be 5 seconds or so noisy, then valves close then another 20 seconds or so it will quieten even more. If not get underneath the rear boxes and make,sure the valves move freely. If you cannot open and close by hand they are stuck.

Nope. The valves require vacuum to *close*. So as the manifold vacuum dissipates when the car is off, the valves open. Until manifold vacuum is re-generated on engine start, they won't close.

Are your valves seized open? My GTS starts with valves shut.

Buy your neighbours some ear defenders to show them you care.

Unfortunately, you can't tame the beast on cold start. When I start it up in my apartment car park it sounds like a bomb has gone off. I have an evil grin on my face when there's people nearby.

I have to say that if mine was a daily I would be looking at options for a quiet coldstart as I leave for work at 6am 3 times a week and that would be pretty unsociable. As it is, air probably only once a week when I do an early start.

Short of replacing the valves with electrically controlled ones, or something mechanical, you'd be very limited. I have great neighbours (the Ghiblis stays loud for rather a lot longer, turbos do that). Not so sure what will happen when / if I rip out the x-pipe resonator...

Thankfully mine is not a daily as with the H pipe it pretty darn loud, especially on a cold start up.

I couldn’t live with the start up noise if my GT was a daily. I did leave for France at 2am a few weeks ago and had to warn my neighbour beforehand (she’s fine actually and do hear us leave…).

I had a V8m3 with modded back box (a 2.0 pipe mod for anyone into these cars). It was great and well judged in normal driving when warm but cold start was brutal, so I had to get cold start coded out which made it a little more acceptable. Many with modded E9X M3 exhausts end up coding out cold start.

My old 32 Ford Hotrod was ridiculously loud on start up, let alone a cold start, in the end I built a wooden box on wheels full of acoustic sound deadening and a home made wooden baffle - two holes in lined up with the exhaust and two holes out. Made starting early mornings neighbourly

There is a few videos on YT with a ferrari having success with pipe noodles and a box, I need to do this as mine is a daily (2-3 6am starts a week)
Put it together with my stalling issue the 2nd and 3rd start does make me wince.

I'd like to stop the alarm beeps for arm/disarming aswel.

My son has a little gizmo plugged into his RS3 which clearly has electrically controlled valves.

So he can have them shut on coldstart along with many other options whilst driving - making it a tad more neighbourly than the Strad very early morning.
