Miles read all that...None the wiser mind....

Hi Andy, it's all b*****ks unless you take a nice picture. I consider I've done well if I get a good one in a hundred. Our cars are just the same, just cos we have them doesn't mean we're breaking any records around the Nurburgring.

The bigger the lens the further away you can stand back, you can get lenses that range from about 18-55 mm which is not that far but you can buy lenses that range from about 35-220mm, however something like a 35-220mm lense will set you back about 300 quid maybe more, people use a large lense for detail shots or close ups for example, a large lense would come in handy if you were photographing wild life. The Photographers in Evo magazine will have large lenses but they will not have much, if any zoom when taking the pictures of the cars in action.

You ready Adam..

I run Canon as my digital platform (never liked Nikon). I have a 10D as a work-horse and a 5D for full frame work (this makes a big difference with lens selection). I have a little Canon snappy thing and I can't remember what the model is, but it's good to stick in your pocket. I also have the last of the Canon SLR film bodies, the 1V for when I want to scan from 35mm negative (Epsom scanner). For medium format I run an old Pentax 67 (stunning camera and the detail is breathtaking) with a 105 and 55mm lens. I also use a Holga for medium format for when I want to go 'seat of the pants'. Similarly I play about with Lomo's and have two. For film work I develop (or cross-develop) the negative and then scan into Apples Aperture software, there-after (and depending on what I'm doing) I'll either use Elements or the full CS suite. I print to Epsom unless I'm going old school when I have to go dark at the local college (I plan to build my own darkroom at some point). I tend to shoot B&W when using film and use Ilford Pan F when light allows, but if not then I'll use Delta.

Cheers, Miles.

You know your stuff to say the least, i have a mate who has a Canon 1000D (i think) he has about 3 lenses, he has the standard one which came with the camera, not sure what size, probably an 18-45mm? and then another lense which goes up to 150mm then he also has this really small lense, i think it is called a pancake lense. I am thinking of buying my first SLR well DSLR, i have been looking at a few, this one takes my fancy and i have read good reports about this particular camera.

Miles, that is the longest answer to what camera have you got I have ever heard, now I know who to come for advice. Always wanted to get into photography, will go on a short course next spring to learn the basics. Just brought a Sony @200 digital SLR.
