Taxi wouldn't cost much!
There is a tram I think.
Awesome city. I have missed it since
I left in the early 2000s. RG will fill you in I am sure!

Premier Inn is right next to main train station,
Trams and local trains service everywhere, really easy to get round,
Arena is easy to get too.

It's been a couple of decades since I lived in Manchester, but I don't recall it as being big on parkland.
Have a look on TripAdvisor. The nearest decent parkland may well be in Cheshire.
Moss Side as the name would suggest, is full of the widest variety of flora and fauna. In the late 80's I lived in a student house close to Princess Parkway, perhaps the most scenic route into the city and I used to be lulled to sleep by the sound of AKs, as rival Yardie gangs fought turf battles in the wee small hours.
It used to make me feel homesick, as I was fairly fresh off the boat from Norn Iron ;)

There's a train direct from Piccadilly in the middle of Manchester to the airport - it takes about half an hour and runs regularly at all hours. There's also an excellent tram system to get around the city and immediate area including both football grounds. It might even go to the airport but I can't remember.

Depending on what your fancy is, the Industrial museum is worth a visit as is the football museum so I'm told (though I've not been there). Otherwise it's more shopping than you can shake a stick at and enough bars to see you to your grave.

Salford Quays is nice for a walk about , the Lowry and imperial war museum are down there , copthorne have a hotel on the quay , if you decide to stay in the city centre the arena is walkable as it's just on the edge.

Is there a lake or a nice park in the middle of the Arena-airport distance?

Style country park is only 1.5 miles or so from the airport.

You also have Dunham massey about 10 miles away.

Bramhall park and country house is also about 10 miles away from the airport.

There is also the tram which runs from manchester airport to the city center

Heaton Park is where we used to go as kids but not very central. In town there is loads to do, Salford Quays, John Rylands Museum, Football Museum, Lowry, Library, Printworks, Shopping, Northern Quarter and a cocktail at Cloud Bar in Hilton.

The Imperial War Museum near Manchester is probably the worst museum I've ever been to (IMHO), a vast gloomy space with a few bits of tat (including a Trabant) lying about.

When you arrive just get the tram (Metrolink) and you can jump off at Deansgate / Castlefield. I think it should cost something like £4 at the most. Deansgate is the nicer part of town, lots of cafes/ restaurants/ shops. I don't really like Piccadilly, it's quite rough (not dangerous) but not really much to do. Salford Quays is OK for a stroll but not really much else to do, this is where the new Media City is housed and there's a nice lake.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

As above trams are good in the centre although it is not that big a place. We always do the Museum of Science & Industry which tells a good interactive story of Manchesters growth.

it's 10 years since I've been there, it wasn't like that then though there may have been an exhibition on

The Christmas Market is good too, but it's a bit early for that being 'only' October...despite what the shops think...

From the airport you can walk across to the Airport Train station for a frequent service to Piccadilly train station in the city centre.
Or you can take a tram from the airport to Piccadilly - the tram will be cheaper and more reliable than the train.
The most expensive is a taxi (pre-booked at the taxi hut at the arrivals) - at least £40 one-way could be more of traffic is bad.

Accommodation -plenty of choice. Try Double Tree by Hilton at Piccadilly. Good tram connections to the Arena and elsewhere - its right in the city centre near Piccadilly Station.

If you don't have transport, visiting Styal Country Park or Dunham Massey will have to be by taxi (very expensive from Piccadilly or Manchester centre anywhere).

I dated one of the female guides there in the 80's. Most were just-graduated ex-students. Apparently the proliferation of all sizes of pistons in continuous motion in the steam engines used to elevate their libedos.
Those were happy, happy days.

Hale is very close to the airport, less than 10 minutes drive. Piccadilly station is the main station in Manchester and is central/ downtown. I’d defiantly stay in Picaddilly. Hale is a very nice area but very suburban.

You could stay in Hale as its so close to the Airport. But transport wise, if he can drop you (or you take a taxi) to Altrincham tram/train interchange you have connectivity to Manchester city centre, Piccadilly, Deansgate and the MEN arena as well as connectivity from any of those places back to Manchester Airport by tram or train.
