Warranty

I do not have a good feeling about this.
My existing 1 year warranty with Warranty Direct runs out 18th March and so far they have been ok
I received a letter today saying they will send me a 1 or 2 or 3 year quote in the next few days

They have changed the name from
Performance and Prestige Securecar 12 months to
Securecare 12 months

They will automatically renew for 1 year (which I do not like) based on estimated mileage

I can amend my policy if I wish to reflect a labour rate of £72 rather than the existing £240 which will reduce the cost of my premium by 16% although it may result in me contributing more to the hourly labour rate for any repairs

Given the labour rate at my local indie is about £70 an hour anyway I may do this

For personal reasons I wish to start the warranty a month later (April)
So I am wondering if it would be a case of back to the drawing board and start again

Personally I wouldn't bother with a warranty, build up all the money you put into the warranty and put it into a warchest and dip into that when you need it. Just out of interest have you used it at all?

Good idea
I did exactly that for house contents insurance once upon a time
No I have never used WD for the last 2 years
I will wait for the quotes to come and see what they are, but will probably take your advice
Thanks mate much appreciated

I agree with you Phil, we do the same for the dogs - put money away instead of pet insurance

I have thought about this for the 4200, and sort of came to Phil's conclusion.
I know they are totally different but I have never had any cover of any sort on my Passat and the biggest bill has been 850, which was a service, MAF sensor, discs and pads all round and a couple of other bits n bobs. Not bad in 11 years and 170k miles, other than that its serviced every 9 month for £120.00.

The problem is when you've been paying for years and never claimed there's always that niggling doubt that you'll stop then next week, bang with no cover.

I've paid pet insurance on 2 dogs for 9 and 3 years which adds up to thousands but I know if I stop one of them will break a leg or something.

If I'd never started I'd say no but in your case I'd look at it as insurance on money you've already paid

Tough call, how gutted would you feel if your 3 month from now war chest was £300 full and a 4K bill came your way which if you'd carried on paying is just you getting your money back.

It's not a warranty, it's insurance, we pay it all the time in the hope we won't need it

Yes Wack you are right
but
I accepted the lack of house (contents) insurance (for example) and had a war chest for that in the belief that I could look after my things, not be burgled etc
It was a risk v reward
The same is true for the QP I am a careful driver (it's the others) I do not drive it daily, so I have to do the risk v reward for that too and at the mo it is looking like a war chest
No right or wrong answers here, just down to the individual as in the Brexit

War chest for me rather than insurance. We do the same with our horses. When we only had one, the insurance was worthwhile, but now we're on five the insurance cost is excessive. We just put the same amount into a war chest and get a little return on the investment rather than nothing if we don't use it.

Only had warranty insurance on one car, that was my Alfa 33P4 over 20 years ago.
Made 2 claims, both rejected for 'wear and tear' (collapsed UJ in the transmission, and a whining rear diff).
Yes both due to wear and tear, but isn't everything? ...and from that moment on never bothered again!

I've looked at that before but wondered what this meant

Once you’ve nominated a vehicle for Parts and Garage Cover you’ll need to keep it serviced in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Servicing must be done by a suitable garage business.

Who decides whether your garage is suitable

We had a 2 year WD policy on the RR, it was £1300 for the duration and we claimed nearly £15k in those 2 years - a new steering column was £4.5k - so a no brainer.

I considered doing the same with the Spyder it would have been £1.2k per year so I decided not to bother and save the money in a war chest. Then the gearbox actuator failed which would have been covered and the bill was just shy of £3.5k. The difference between the WD securecare and premium care is normally that wear & tear items are covered on the later where described which on the Spyder included clutch which was another £4k

You make a choice and pay accordingly.
