USB charger

Since the cig lighter didn't seem to work (and I don't smoke), I changed it to be a USB charger port with battery power display.

Works well and looks good. I just need to get a shorter charging cable now.

Here it is - it has its a fuse on the wiring.

It turns off with the ignition and the small button next to the display is on/off.

Probably a 30 min job all in - a small bit of filing (of the USB device) is needed to slot it into the cig lighter hole.

Just trying to work out if I’m handy enough to fit this myself.
Did you actually remove the cig lighter device completely first? Where to and how did you run the cables please? Did you have to remove any trim?
Apologies for the dumb questions!

No need to run new wires, it just uses the cig lighter wires. My lighter didn't work, but was still getting power.

1) Remove the small side trims of the centre console (roughly where your knee would be) - you lift them from the bottom and they pop off, start towards the rear, then the end towards the front of the car slides down to come out. They are quite robust so won't break.

2) Remove the plastic/rubber circles at the bottom of the cup holder, remove the 2 bolts underneath.

3) Use a plastic pry to lift up the "traction control" switch, remove the bolt under it.

4) Open the cig tray, lift out the ash tray, remove the bolt.

6) Cut the wires of the cig lighter, you have to break the plastic to get it out. RIP lighter...

7) Check the fitment of the USB adapter, I had to do a small amount of filing to fit it. Once in, it has a nut you screw on from the underside to secure it.

8) You might need something to connect 2 wires (can't remember if it came with this), I had some connections so used them).

9) Once connected, turn on ignition and check it works. First time I had the wires the wrong way round and only realised after rebuilding...

10) Put the trim back together.

if you need video help, this is a guy removing the trim, just the first part of the video is relevant:

Fantastically detailed installation manual - thank you so much for the input.
Will give it a go when it arrives :)

Many thanks for this and definitely one to consider as the fit for our USB adaptor (or whatever we use) can be a bit dodgy and we also never use the lighter.

I used to fold all my excess cable into the ashtray and then slide the cover over so I just had the cable I need hanging out.

Whilst it is apart you could run the cable to come out below the side trim. That way you can simply push any excess up under the trim out of the way. Depending where your phone holder is of course.
