How did they get the dust on the cars so evenly? Can you spray it on?

I once pranged a wing mirror of a hire car and with a plane to catch I put a bit of spit on the scratch and then scooped up and blew some dust over the damaged area. Got a few funny glances but it seemed to have worked.
