The best exhaust for a 4200?

Hi All,

Following on from last night (and I hope Urbanmasser does not kill me!) I am STILL considering new exhaust bits for my 4200. My initial thoughts were just new rear boxes, but after reading up (and talking to 2b1ask) that might be stretched to delting the initial CATS.

The toruble I've had is that i have never heard any aftermarket exhausts on a 4200. On the wet handling day i think the other 4200 had standard exahusts, the same for last night at Ace.

Just wondering what people may have, or have heard, and think it sounds the best. I know it's all subjective, but i'd like a bit of a growl at low revs (nothing boy racer-ish), to be tolerable and not a drone at 2k-3.5k revs, and then for the heavens to open when at 5k-7k revs. Of course not to have any terrible resonance!

From reading obviously Larini seem the recommended, but apparently they have no low end and are all scream?

Anyone had the Autoshield straight through exhausts fitted or anything from Bill McGrath?

Just keen to get some thoughts.

Thanks
R

Hi there

Mine has Larnini back boxes. Though it sounds good theres a bit of 'drone' at motorway speeds. You are welcome to have a listen, I am near Watford.

Sounds like a great offer - are you around tomorrow either around 11:30am or 1pm?

Cheers

3rd...

I had Larini back boxes on my 4200 but they wore me down after a few months with the drone at 2.5 to 3k.

Great when you give them the beans mind you. I was using car a lot so too much for daily driving IMHO but for weekend stuff probably more of an option.

Interesting... I have read on various forums that the Tubi makes a drone as well.

Which aftermarket exhaust will get a 4200 to sound close to a GT-S?

Don't know what's on mine or how they sound from outside (useful huh) but there's no hint of drone at any speed
Just a lovely singing noise:)

This is surprising as I had thought that Larini were the only ones that virtually guaranteed no "drone" but maybe that is all custom exhausts?

Sounds promising, do you know who fitted them?

Maybe what one person think sounds like a drone, does not to another?

No idea what they are or who fitted them but I'm sure masersod will remember if no one else can.

Very true about subjectivity when it comes to sound and worth bearing in mind

Just if anyone is interested, i was doing some google searching and noticed that MIJ Performance and TorqueFlow both had very similar website wording, despite the fact that they have reviews on the net that suggest they are a different company. Further research shows, both companies were registered in Birmingham, but more interestingly, both were dissolved in May and July this year. It would appear, from the fact that the websites are so similar, that they are now the same company using old trading names. Can't be sure though, that's just speculation.

I have Larini cats and X pipe and i love the combination: Bit louder than stock, but different tone than OEM, more Ferrari-ish.

I think that regarding back boxes, tubi is the best solution for me.They're loud, but not annoying at low rpm.

Loz has tried both Tubi and Larini, so he could write his thoughts.

One member got his off them.......but I belive the straight pipes were welded on instead of being put on so they can be swopped around again....we did a deal with them once.....!!

Thanks for the info Frank, but I don't really understand.

You've got straight throughs from Autoshield. Are those welded on? For that matters aren't all back boxes welded on? Also when you say you did a deal, do you mean a forum deal was once done with MIJ or Autosheild?

Cheers

Seems interesting that someone got straight throughs for £250.

My Larini back boxes lasted less than a week on my car. The drone was intolerable at the 2.5 - 3k rev range which happens to be the revs most used in London traffic driving. I was pleased to move them on.

i used to have Larini's on mine but the vibration at idle and the drone meant they didn't last long (actually I had the dealer remove them before I even bought the car). After much I went for a custom system - Prospeed exhausts in Cardiff. It cost £1200 and the fabricated and fitted a complete custom system in a day - so I have backboxes and sports cats. It sounds great - much more grumble at low revs and a great sound at high revs. No drone, and when idling it's a nice sound not too over the top. A great solution all in all. Only downside is that you can't easily hear before you buy (though you're welcome to come listen to mine - Wimbledon area - it won't necessarily be exactly what you get as they're not off-the-shelf). Plus you need to go to Cardiff for them - I did it in one long day - left home at 6am, there by 9:00, spent the day shopping and then returned at 5:30 to collect the car. I would recommend them.

Cheers,
Ben.
