Seasonal Starting Issues

Hi Everyone!

Am having some trouble starting my 3200. Have looked through the forum and tried some of the previous solutions but drawn a blank- any extra thoughts from any of you would be much appreciated before I have to call my specialist out.

Just to run you my problem: Basically, the car has been in storage for the winter in a warm garage but the battery has gone flat. The car was last driven in November and last started at the beginning of December but when I went to start it a few weeks ago, there was no life, the battery was completely flat. No problems I thought, I connected up my booster pack and tried the ignition. All the lights came on dash, the car running through its usual warning lights on followed by lights off, the usual start up procedure. When I then tried turning the key to fire the engine, I can hear the starter motor turning over but I also get a beeping from the dash followed by the Check Engine light along with the NO ASR light, which I never had before.

I tried then locking the car (with the boot closed and the booster pack still connected) and unlocking it, but the same thing happens. I have also tried starting it with a new spare battery connected as well as trying to start it with jump leads connected to a running car. Finally I have also disconnected the battery, left it for 10 minutes then reconnected it in hope of tricking the ECU/ resetting it. All the while, the same thing happens, the start up procedure is fine until I try and turn the engine over at which point the car beeps at me (the same beeping sound you get for not having your seatbelt on at start up) followed by a check engine warning light and a NO ASR warning too.

So at this point I thought it must be immobilizer related, but the Code lamp only comes on occasionally and almost never before I have tried starting it for the first time. On the rare occasion the code lamp is on, I have tried the Emergency Restart procedure as detailed in the 3200 workshop manual (holding the throttle down for 8 seconds or so then counting the amount of flashes the CEL gives in relation to the immobilser code), but when I have tried this, the CEL never goes out or starts flashing, no matter how long I hold the throttle down for.

I feel that the problem is electrical related- I cant imagine it is a mechanical fault. The car was running perfectly before it was put in for the winter and was serviced not that long ago and had a new battery less that a year ago. I have checked the fuel lines (to the best of my ability) as well as the starter motor, but I cant believe something mechanical like a knackered starter motor could have happened whilst it sitting there, especially as it had been running so well. I am also loathe to call out my specialist for something seemingly as trivial as a flat battery.

Like I said, any help or advice or previous experience you guys have in this area would be much appreciated, I really want to get driving the car again soon as it seems to have been a relatively mild winter (though not through the rains of today!)

Many thanks

Have you checked all the leads connected to the battery terminals, there are usually a few, to see if they are all tight..?? It sounds electrical and possibly related to the immobilizer, if the lamp continues to flash it has not switched off..!! This is more than likely battery related, they need a strong battery..!! Charge it up and activate the central locking with the remote, leave it a few minutes then unlock with the remote, make sure the lamp goes off when you unlock, if it does she should start..!!

Disconnect the battery for at least an hour.

Make sure your battery terminals are all tight and connected

Make sure the battery is is good condition (maybe get a new one)

Fingers crossed
