Sat Nav Question

Hello,

Scanned the threads, but could not find an answer, so hopefully this is not a repeat question.

Has anyone tried to use the Maserati Coupe's Sat Nav whilst travelling across countries (and therefore, across the region that is stored on one CD?).

I need to make trips from a small town in one country, to a small town in another country, but the CD I have in by default, does not know about the other country (and will only get me as near as the closest major city to it).

I am wondering what happens if I buy the CDs for the other countries? Will I have to swap CDs every time I cross a border? Will I be able to do route planning correctly, or do I need to choose a new route every time I cross a zone? Will 'alternative' routes work? (Does it ever work?).

Or should I just buy a tom-tom and tape it to the screen? (I thought about it, but the downside is the battery lasts only a few hours, and my trips usually last 10 hours).

The reason I am asking (instead of finding out on my own), is I do not want to invest a lot of money in buying the CDs to try it out, to only find out I still can not do proper route planning (or worse, that when I swap CDs a new route pops up that makes me go backwards!)

Some days I do miss the BMW's I-Drive :p

Thank you all in advance!

If anyone knows how I can get a Tom-Tom (or Garmin, or Whatever) to work for a 10 hour trip, without having an ugly cord going down to the cigarette lighter, please let me know.

I do not like cords, as it makes the car less attractive, and I got her because she is a pretty car :)

Thank you.

The sat nav disc can be removed on route as the system will download and store the data prior to ejecting the disc. so in theroy you can load the destination with the 2nd disc, then add the 1st disc to get to the border...I do not know how big the memory is, and I would suspect it will not re-calculate if you go off track

Hello all,

I am now armed with two sets of CDs. One for Switzerland/North Italy/South Germany, and the other for North/South France.

I am attempting to go from a small town in Switzerland to a small town in France.

I insert the France CD, and am able to find my final destination without problem (Yay!).
I tell it to map a route.
It does not tell me how far it is, nor tells me how to get there. It does give me a little arrow thing pointing in vaguely the right direction :(
I pull out the France CD and put in the Swiss CD (it makes no mention of retaining the route details)
With the Swiss CD in it still only shows an arrow pointing in vaguely the rightish direction, but no distance, or info on the trip computer.

I try to repeat the whole thing with the Swiss CDs in first, but when I enter my France address (stored in the address book), it says it has no idea where that is.

So it does not appear possible to cross map boundries :(

Obviously work arounds are possible:
Set hop1 to somewhere on the 'border' of the maps, then swap CDs when I get to the border and set hop2.
Of course, I have to hope that the new route will not just backtrack me, and that it will take me on a good route (route may vary depending which border town I swap CDs at).

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thank you.

Slightlyoff beat from the main question but does anyone know how I can get a disc with Australia on it. A bit bizarre but NAVTEQ do maps for Australia for other gps devices/companies but do not do one for Becker. Should be some way to get those maps onto a disc for a Becker cascade. Cheers G

Geofflyn,
Again sorry for hijacking this thread, but I was wondering whether you had any success in finding a disc with Australia's maps for your Becker system?
I contacted the local Becker representative located in Balwyn Vic some time ago and he sounded like he had absolutely no idea.
I was in Zagames early this week and meant to ask them what the Australian delivered cars have; presumably not Becker systems.
Has your car arrived yet and is it complianced / registered?
Regards,
Stephen

Hi Stephen,

No is the answer I had the same experience with the local becker boys, I don't rate Zagames either unfortunately..I ended up buying a TomTom 1050 with world maps..which works well in Aus having already used it drivng from melbourne to Sydney etc.. I am still looking though..

Hi Stephen . No luck at alI spoke with Becker here and Germany and no go. There are NAVTEQ maps for Australia and Becker use the NAVTEQ system so if I can find a way to get them loaded them I am sure there is a solution although. I am going to have to invent it. Car is due in Aust intone next two weeks and then complaining registering time etc. I am chewing my nails in fear trepidation and anticipation. Cheers Geoff
