I've worked out there a lot in the last 4 years in an industrial city called YonKang, about 300 miles SW of Shanghai.
It's a very different culture based on trust and respect or 'mi-quan-shi' 'no problem' roughly translates to; I'll do anything you say, not let you pay for anything or let you alone for a minute... Thank you for the order. Now we have mi-quan-shi... You can get yourself back to the airport, we will send you exactly what you ordered (including faults if you didn't spot them on the sample!!!), oh and before we ship the contract price has jumped 10%!!!!
Don't get me wrong I love the place and the 'can do' attitude but caveat emptor... Live there for a few weeks and you can start to see the corruption and hoodwinking that exists in the emerging capitalist ecconomy. One example I encountered (of many) was steel tubing 32mm RHS should have 2.0mm wall thickness (allowable range of 1.75-2.25mm) so the sample arrives and is passed as within speck; somehow the order arrives and the storeman is paid off to accept what comes off the lorry... Call a QS meeting and they'll fetch up a sample of the good stuff every time!!! Goods arive in UK and start failling and when you investigate the tube will be anything down to 0.7mm thick!!! AAAaaagghhhh!!!!!!
Don't let me get started on welding........
Millionaires you bet yourass there are plenty....
