Q? Always had a bit of problem with getting reverse on my 4200 Coupe (86k on clock - I am third owner well looked after ) but last solved by gearbox oil change and re-pressurising the pump. car has been great ever since but suddenly, reverse has disappeared altogether - there are no signs/sounds of it even trying to engage. has anybody had similar experience or ideas?

Its really quite a simple one to diagnose really , it can be one of 6 things , either the reverse lever and its micro switch , the relay and fuse for it , the reverse gear actuator , or pump problems (leaking pressure,) or lastly the footbrake switch located at the top of the brake pedal , could be sticking but then again it would be the same for selecting 1st

Adding another it could possibly be the boot/bonnet opening switch/sensors , reverse cannot be selected if the boot is open/up its a safety thing and makes sense when you think about it

Slightly off topic but I find it very annoying you can't reverse with the drivers door open!

Seems the spring on my reverse switch is either broken or failling and I got caught recently with errors as a result. I now positively push the lever back quickly after selecting reverse. If you get a reverse error however just get out and push the car backwards manually about a foot and it clears it!

I had errors on mine, turned out to be a glitch in the electronics box below the lever....got a 2nd hand one...sorted

When I bought my car the PPI said:

* The reverse switch `detent` doesn’t seem to be working correctly, but it selects reverse perfectly well (the detent is a device that’s built into the switch to stop you knocking the reverse lever accidently whilst driving, and approx 90% of 4200’s we see here have the same issue!)

Basically the switch is quite fragile and is a concern whenever someone else drives my car
