We have reverse park only signs at work. Less likely to run someone over is the reason.

For on-street parking it is about general traffic safety and smooth traffic flow.

Wikipedia explains it well:
"For back-in parking, vehicles preparing to enter parking space drive slightly past the space, signal, and then back into the space. When leaving the space, drivers have an unobstructed view of traffic and can enter the traffic stream directly. In comparison, drivers using traditional pull-in angle parking often have difficulty seeing other traffic as they back out of the space, resulting in traffic delays and considerable risk of collisions with pedestrians, bicyclists, and vehicles."

Also, presumably to go front-in, someone has to cross both streams of traffic when parking and exiting, whereas with back in, only one stream of traffic is affected.

That also may be why the space was vacant, as it was not available to people going that way - one of my parking rules is 'if a space looks too good to be true, there might be an issue'.

There was nothing dangerous manoeuvring in, or out.
Clearly it was deemed to be, but not advertised as such.....very well.
A solid line didn’t exist down the middle of the road.

I have tried at numerous workplaces to get people to park alternately 'rear-in' and 'nose-in', with an off-set, to give more space for door opening in tight spaces. But nobody seems to be willing to go with it. Would be better in supermarkets too.

i do remember reading a while back that some parking fines are technically not enforceable unless lines/markings are precisely laid out, there's actually a manual in the UK for such things, i think charges have been withdrawn purely over not the right spacings of lines and returns etc

It’s a bloody small sign too, are they all like that in Aus?

The rules are not intended for sensible cautious people making careful judgements, they are made for general careless morons.

Are you officer ID 18?

Yup, that's the sort of reaction. "Who put you in charge?" "Fascist!" "Why are you such a nerd?" "I'll park how like." "Your signs are too small."

I try to say, "But if we all followed this rule, it would be better and easier and we would all be happier, and our cars would have fewer dings. But they just say, "Stop telling me what to do".

Years ago I was in a long burger van queue, and the burger guy was taking the order from the first person, cooking it, serving it, and then turning to the next person and starting their order. I called from about 12 places back in the queue, "What if you took two or three orders at once, and then you could cook them all at the same time?" I was amazed to find that just about everyone in the queue rounded on me, and accused me of trying to jump the queue."

I'm trying to improve the universe one process at a time, but I'm surrounded by fools. (Present company excepted, of course).

This is the rant thread, right?
