I have a 2007 Sport GT with duoselect and wish to fit slightly shorter springs. Can anyone tell me how easy or otherwise it is to remove the rear shock absorbers. The bottom fitting appears to be an Allan Key type bolt, does this just come out or is it a bit more than that?

Many thanks in anticipation

Hi BJL,

Here are the instructions for removing the rear shock absorbers...

· Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
· Remove the wheel concerned.
· Remove the luggage compartment trim panels.
· Detach the rear shock absorber's electrical connection.
· Undo the three screws that secure the shock absorber to the body.
· Undo the screw that fasten the shock absorber to the hub carrier.
· Tilt and remove the rear shock absorber complete with the spring.
· Remove the two shock absorber flanges
Note...When refitting, remeber to respect the original order and direction of the two flanges.
· Mount the shock absorber in a suitable press to compress its spring.
· Check that the lower part of the shock absorber is firmly coupled to the seat of the tool.
· Also check that the electric cable of the shock absorber is properly positioned and that it
does not interfere with or be damaged during spring compression.
· compress the shock absorber until you are able to access the retaining nut.
· Unscrew the retaining nut and retrieve the washer.
· Remove the top mount complete with upper bushing.
· Remove the upper rubber spacer, then remove the spring.
· If necessary, remove the tapered washer.

I do have the instructions for refitting the shock absorbers and the distances (for OE springs),
tightening torques etc...let me know if you want me to post these...

Regards,
Enzo.

Hi Enzo,

Thats terrific, many thanks. I'm not a mechanic but am reasonably capable so will have a go. any further info you have would be very welcome.

Am I correct in thinking that the bottom bolt just undoes and pulls out or does it need a press of some sort?

Regards
BJL

Refitting the rear shock absorbers...

· Fit the lower joint to the shock absorber.
· Fit the positioner ring nut (1) and, depending on the spring,
adjust the distance A from the hub centre to the value given in the table below.

dist A.JPG

table 1.JPG

· Tighten the locknut to a torque of 59Nm.

torque 1.JPG

· Check that the spring is in proper working order and that its dimensions comply with the indicated values.
· For vehicles up to assembly no. 21586.

value 1.JPG

· For vehicles from assembly no. 21587, regardless of whether they are fitted on shock absorbers
with adjustable ring nut or with fixed calibration.

value 2.JPG

· Fit the lower rubber spacer into the seat.
· Fit the spring and then the upper rubber spacer.
· Fit the top mount complete with upper bushing.
· Position the complete shock absorber in the seat of a press, then compress the spring.
· Position the washer (1) and fully screw down the nut (2), then tighten it to a torque of:
- 75 Nm for EUROPE vehicles up to assembly 17235 in the right-hand drive versions,
- 40 Nm for EUROPE vehicles from assembly 17236 in the right-hand drive versions.

torque 2.JPG

· Fit the shock absorber and tighten the screw that fastens the shock absorber
to the hub carrier to the following torque. (This is the bottom bolt we spoke about earlier).
- 196 Nm for EUROPE vehicles up to assembly no. 17235 in the right-hand drive versions,
- 78 Nm for EUROPE vehicles from assembly no. 17236 in the right-hand drive versions.
· Tighten the three screws that secure the shock absorber to the body to this torque.
- 33.6 Nm for EUROPE vehicles up to assembly no. 17235 in the right-hand drive versions.
- 25 Nm for EUROPE vehicles from assembly no. 17236 in the right-hand drive versions.
· Attach the rear shock absorber's electrical connection.
· Refit the luggage compartment trim panels.
· Refit the wheel.
· Reconnect the battery's negative terminal.
Note, there are a series of component self learning processes that go on after reconnecting the battery,
but thats a whole different thread...:D
Make sure you have the radio & possibly CD code(s) handy as they will need to be entered.
Regards,
Enzo.

Hi Enzo

You are one **** of a helpful chap, many thanks for the details.
My Quattroporte Sporte GT is after Oct 06 build and has an Assembly No. 29562 which has fixed perch shocks. My intension is to have a pair of standard springs, which are on order, reduced in height by about 20mm which when compressed should give a reduction in height at the rear of about 25mm. I think the pictures show the adjustable perch type which was used up to Oct 06. Is it the same basic principle? My springs arrive next week and I'm should be ready to do the swap within a week after that. I'll take some before and after pics so you can see my handiwork but i might also get a mechanic to do the complicated bits, just so I will be able to drive my pride and joy after the transplant. Once again, many thanks, BJL

Hi BJL,
Yes your assumption is correct...
the pics do show the adjustable perch type (up to assembly 21586),
but the principal is the same...
Hope it all goes well, do please post up some pics of before and after,
would be good to see what the stance looks like and hear your opinion on the effect on the ride,
Regards,
Enzo.
