that's very handy info, I did forget to renew one in 2013 and didn't know that you can still apply to get it back, will get on to DVLA to get it back, thanks for posting this

So if I read that right it’s only after the 10 years that you would loose the right to buy back?

I have one that I transferred off a car just 2 months ago for the £80 or whatever it is. It’s worthless but assume there’s nothing I need to do here as I haven’t bothered putting it on the replacement car yet

the 10 year certificate thing only came in to force about a couple of years ago, prior to that a retention certificate only lasted for up to 3 years max before expiring

I have mine on retention, since taking it off the Maserati, it does make it clear that it is for a ten year period. What is also little understood is that you do not own the number, just the right to use it as far as I am aware.

Indeed, you never own the number....

It is pretty clear on the retention certificate that you need to reapply prior to expiry after 10 years

The DVLA made more than £110m from personalised registration sales in 2017

Plus around the same in fines when the police stop you for mis-spacing it so it looks like it's worth the £999 they charged you for it
