Some live with risk better than others. You evidently appear to be in that camp. 996 GT3 is a great car. Go for the coveted RS badge and you propel yourself and your driving experience into another league. Keep it well maintained, don't bend it and keep the miles sensible and you'll do well on resale (or write it into your Last Will & Testament as an heirloom to pass down the family line). I might add the Club Sport is the one to go for - but the Comfort spec cars are in more abundance.
The MK1 996 GT3 CS is epic. I'd probably still have one, but somebody contacted me via 911UK about 10 years ago and asked if I'd sell. I made £4k which was good considering I'd driven it as a daily for a few years. (This was one of 28 genuine M003 UK Club Sports out of 109 UK delivered MK1 GT3's).

Lovely. It’s the mk1 996 GT3 that I fancy. Though comfort spec would be just fine for me these days.

I went to look at the yellow one at Steve Bull Porsche in Devizes. Very tempting, but the price worries me with Brexit looming. Though that didn’t stop me buying the red 944 while I was there anyway.

Didn't Porsche then do it the 'correct' way and bought them out the other year?
No the other way, veedub now own. (intake of breath) Audi, SEAT, Skoda, Lambourghini, Ducati, Bentley, Bugatti, MAN, Scania and TRATON and their own ban business... Although the Porsche family have a stake in VW...

Had a Guards Red 944 too. If anything, the values (of cars like GT3's) may increase in times of uncertainty as people decide to keep their money in hard assets, and potential currency devaluation makes the UK an attractive place to buy.
Rolex Sports watches are an example, better than money in the bank.

VW also own Porsche AG (hence the platform sharing, Panamera = Bentley GTC = Audi A6, chassis anyway and some engines). Porsche SE (the family investment company) owns 52% of VW.

good summary here https://www.bosshunting.com.au/culture/volkswagen-group-porsche

fiona has a 2.7 2007 and we bought itnin full knowledge of the potential problems. 4 years and 12k miles later it is fine, checked yearly for fragments in oil and fully serviced each year by specialist it is now worth more than she paid and she has had fun for 4 years........it that not the point?
Older cars no matter the brand or model always have Potential problems, the "golden rule" applies, buy the best you can and limit the possibility of any problems.

Great to hear yours is still going well buddy. Isn't this like all cars though that have issues. You hear more about the problems on forums than the ones that don't. If you read the M3 forums you would never buy a V8 one....If you read on here you would be put off buying because of variators.....but wonder in reality what % of cars actually have the problems talked about. OK I know the Porsche one is probably far more documented but they can't all go bang. I am right in thinking the 2.7 was less prone to the issues unlike the 3.2 S.

Its still an itch I want to scratch for sure.
Doing lots of research and think I prefer a 986 over 987 and will probably pay more for a good older one.
Crazy or what comments welcome.

Whatever takes your fancy. Nothing crazy. Everyone has their taste and attitude to risk.

I reckon safest bets are a 987.2 or an early non S 986.

I might go the 987.2 route as I basically can’t be arsed anymore.

I wish I'd bought a 968 Club Sport that I was on the point of trading in my 944 against. I bought a 1978 911 3.0 SC instead which would be worth even more now but had to go because it wasn't very good..

Loved the 968 Clubsport. Feel in love with a white one with green decals and green wheels at Dick Lovett back in the day. Still have the original brochure.....and 944 one.

I was always a sucker for the banana yellow ones - still a bit tempted but they're hard money nowadays

Yes it was the one that dragged me in after seeing one at the Bristish Motorshow. Liked the powder blue ones as well.
