In the current Maserati Australia customer magazine "il tridente" issue #27 Winter, there is an article on the last hurrah of the Maserati V8 engine.

It mentions the early V8s from the 450S racecar onwards, then says "Since the early noughties, Maserati has developed its V8s with Ferrari and the resulting engines have had much in common. Although, unlike Ferrari, the brand continued to favour the crossplane crankshaft, which delivers that characteristic V8 burble. Ferrari assembled the engines just a few kilometres from Maserati's hometown of Modena."
This we all know, but this next bit is a revelation.....
"The arrival of the Ferrari era hastened the end of the twin-turbocharged V8s run." ( Refers to Shamal & 3200 ).
"Maserati engines became co-developments. Legendary Formula 1 designer Paolo Martinelli, who had been responsible for the Ferrari engines that powered Michael Schumacker to domination of the championship, began working at Maserati on secondment. "
"He designed V8s that were the zenith of a time before emissions regulations ushered in smaller capacities and turbocharging."
" Maserati initially offered Martinelli's designs in a 4.2-litre unit and subsequently as a 4.7-litre."

So there we have it from the horse's mouth.

I understand that the cylinder head design was lifted straight from the F1 engine.

It would be great to have this confirmed.
I'll try to find the article.
Not to hijack the thread but have any of you ever seen this engine design?
Ernesto drew this for an OSCA motor. Found it researching Maserati engines;
