old car problems?

I noticed the auto gear acting funny between N and D mode. From N to D, it skips to 3 in the gear lever. But the computer on board still says D, even the lever arm in 3. And I try to down shift to 1, it won't engage to 1, still stays at 2 from the onboard display. What do you think? Big bills coming soon? Oh boy....

Sounds like it might not be that bad. Look herehttp://www.eurospares.co.uk/userImages/004/Large/004_045.gif and it looks as though bolt 11 controls the lever position and allows for some adjustment in the slotted hole in the rod between the lever and the box.

Thanks Arnie. My guess is as long as it engages in D, it still does its own automatic thing...my simple guess?

Hi Arnie,

Thanks for the link to the drawing at Eurocars, my 3200 ocassionally has trouble engaging Park and I guessed that the linkage required a bit more travel. The drawing showed me where the adjustment was, at the rear of the gearbox, just next to the universal joint and fairly easy to get to. I moved the link about 3mm and the problem has gone for now.
