New daily hack help

Chaps I need some help and sensible input in a quandary I have.

My current daily hack is a Discovery 3 which I have run for the last 4 years and is due to move else where within my company, I have set a budget for its replacement at £30k.

The replacement must be 4wd and be able to tow 3500kg legally, I have sort of short listed a Rangerover Sport 5.0 Supercharged and a Porsche Cayenne GTS.

I would be very interested in people's opinion on the above cars, even more so if they have first hand experience, and any other suggestions people may have.

Range Rover Sport V8 diesel for me awesome bit of kit used to regularly go over to Belgium in one when I was working in the UK and doing jobs there.
As with everything proper service and maintenance is the key and just in case a good warranty.

I had a 4.2 supercharged RRover... Awesome machine that never let me down.
Super comfy over distance and classy too. As long as it's been properly looked after I would always recommend one.

Range Rover TDV8 are awesome especially the later 4.4 over 300 BHP and torque to pull a house down

We are going to be replacing our RR early in the New Year and have decided on the Disco 4 primarily as it has the additional 2 seats in the back so we can take all the kids and the in laws out in one car. The Disco 4 is certainly a step up in interior fit over the Disco 3 and the 8 speed box in the post 2011 models is really smooth.

Depends on how often you need to use it as a tow vehicle, if it is a lot I would definitely got for a Discovery 4, when towing big trailers they are much better than the Range Rover etc.,..

Was talking about this only last week with Brian James (of the eponymous trailer firm) the only things he rates higher purely as a tow car is a Nissan Patrol.

The company, now run by his sons, has a fleet of Disco 4 Commercials for towing duties.

We have a fleet of 2 disco 3 doing the main towing duties, this car will be for me and will only tow 1 or 2 times a month, so I was looking for something with a bit of style and grunt, however I may have an issue fitting a tacho to a Porsche.

Did consider the Range Rover, however they are not much different to the one I had in 03 -53 plate 4.4, just a little old fashioned now

This is a list on parkers of cars that can tow 3.5t trailers

The only one I've driven is the defender which could pull a ship but anything over 60 gets a bit scary

If you are looking to tow anything heavier than 2,000kg, the list of suitable cars starts to get smaller, and moving up to the 3,500kg, the list shrinks even more. Below is a list of the cars that can tow 3,500kg.

Land Rover Defender
Mitsubishi Shogun
Land Rover Discovery
Jeep Grand Cherokee
BMW X6
Isuzu Trooper
Kia Sorento
Toyota Land Cruiser
Range Rover
Mercedes-Benz GL
Mercedes-Benz M-Class
Volkswagen Touareg
When towing for business, if you add a trailer, taking the total weight over 3,500kg, then a tachograph, in most cases, should be fitted. Most vehicle manufacturers will offer a tachograph as a cost option.

I'd at least test the land cruiser , I know a guy that has a 15 year old one bought from new and he absolutely loves it

I have a 4.4 Range Rover. Used for all long distance and towing duties. Have to say mightily impressed. On a run to Devon from Northants averaged 35mpg. Very relaxed. Towing a car trailer and Alfasud from Doncaster had 29mpg.

The only car the mother of child has coveted and she is railing at the idea of me selling it.

Ok guys, took everything on board, test drove Range rovers, Sports and Discovery 4, but having had 16 different Land Rover products and the huge repair bills to prove, i've decided to try German for a few years, i'll be picking this little beauty up on Friday

Top choice.

We've had a couple of Cayennes, and both proved to be stunningly reliable, if spectacularly thirsty. They need a good battery though, similar to the Masers - a duff battery causes all manner of spurious 'faults' which magically disappear when the failing battery is replaced.

I had an older cayenne 4.5 V8 S. after the cooling pipe replacement. I had no real issues and have to say I loved it as the family car. Unfortunately when the kids moved school the 7 mpg commute got a bit costly so we sold it for something more sensible (Boring.) Never towed with it mind you.
