Maybe try some 'scenic' routes then - probably takes just as long but at least you're moving (I use a good ol'fashioned AA map book that highlights scenic routes to plot our journeys)
We have maps in all our cars and use them regularly here in France and have some amazing journeys and no annoying yapping in your ears.

As someone who travels to Penrith frequently from the Cotswolds (M5/6) I agree.

My last use of the same motorway route took 10 hours to Penrith... with 2 dogs and a very annoyed GF.
