Saw that reported earlier, it's a pity a lot are so far gone though. Some real rarities and "lost" cars in there.

Now has a new price: £49,950...

I know classic cars prices are on the up but that is astounding.

Strangely as much as I hate classic car speculation there is a case to be made for buying some cars as investments at the moment.

We are currently following up a couple of speculative options. Worse case they will flat line but we can enjoy driving them whilst we have them, best case we get some enjoyment and over 5 to 10 years some profit.

I would have thought the SZ already fitted into that category?

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and hopefully soon new to Maserati. All the expertise on here is very impressive. I have done a bit of research and I am looking for a late Merak, preferably RHD but LHD ok. But a euro model. There don't seem to be many about. At least not many decent ones. This one looks interesting but I'm struggling to get my head round the price rise! Anyone got any tips on where to start? And any good resources? I've seen Enrico's page and a couple of other sites, but there doesn't seem to be much info out there

There are a few out in Europe and the US so an import could be the way to go to get a cheaper one.I agree the prices are a little bit optimistic at the moment!

Thank you - I'm wary of US ones. The bronze one that sold last summer (Coys?) for about 40k seemed to be bodged into Euro spec, and it must cost a fortune to do that properly. But if that one os for sale at the moment in CHeshire at 60k, then the elms one at 50k doesn't seem too bad - but that's a **** of a jump since last summer! Given someone is asking 78k for one in Suffolk that was serviced at a local garage, well good luck with that one! But auction prices do seem to show that paid prices have genuinely gone up. Is it fair to start to ask if a Maserati bubble is forming? I hope not... (well, not just yet) The Merak is a dream car since I saw one as an 8 year old boy - a red one that looked even better than the one n the Observer's Book of Cars that I drooled over! Anyone else remember that?

Hi Phil - I viewed the blue car. Send me a PM if you want feedback. The market at the moment is very strong. Interest in 70's cars has increased significantly and the days of the £10k Merak are over. The main issue you have is that until recently the value were so low that it made little sense to keep these cars in good condition. The blue car for example has had about £20k spent on it in the last 6 years so unless you are doing it for the love of it many people just put the car in a garage and forgot about it. Hence there are very few good examples around out there and I expect more than half of the 1200 Meraks have been scrapped meaning they are very rare cars. There is a silver one coming up for auction at Brooklands soon which will be a good indicator of the market. Its not an SS but I expect it will go for £30k+ depending on its condition. Another factor to consider is that values of the Bora and Khamsin have risen signifcantly, both now are well over £100k for good examples. The increase in the price of things like the Ferrari Daytona is probably behind this. This inevitably leads people to look at the Merak so its a knock on effect and many people are looking for relative value.

PhilM - start with a call to Andy at McGrath Maserati. They are the Merak experts and know many of the best UK cars. Andy may know of something possibly available. But don't be thinking a decent one can be had for under 30k. I'd say £30k for a sound car with potential, £40k for a really good one, and £50k for a concours.
