MC Stradale Tyres

Hey

Just a wee update on my tyre quest.

I need new rear tyres and the car is wearing it's factory approved Pirelli Corsas. The fronts are OK still however I have found the Pirellis to be poor in cool temperatures and in the wet therefore I will change all 4. As I live in Scotland, this poses some issues.....

I therefore set about looking at the alternatives which has turned out to be not as easy as you'd imagine. The Stradale wears 255/35/20 Y fronts and 295/35/20 Y rears. This is one size larger than the other Granturismo models making it just obscure enough to be a pain in the ****.

After much searching, I've gone for Michelin Pilot Super Sport K1 fronts and K2 rears. The K numbers are Ferrari tread designs which I'm fine with and make me happier (for no worthwhile reason) than similar Porsche, BMW or Audi codes. Amazingly, there was not really a decent alternative option anyway as the manufacturers seem to make several versions on the front size and few of the rear. I tried Continental, Goodyear, Bridgestone and Yokohama, as well as a cheeky look at Vredestein but no-one could do a similar set. I can get Conti 6 fronts but only Conti 5 rears etc.

Michelin was my number 1 choice anyway so that's all good.

Lots of price shopping and I've gone for Black Circles, fitting at my local McConechy's (who i know and like) for a total of £982.18. I'm as pleased with that as someone who just spent nearly a grand can be !!

Will report on the changes to handling etc down the line. I'm hoping for a big change. We'll see.

As a result, I will have some part worn (still lots of life in them) Pirelli Corsa fronts is anyone is looking for a set. No repairs or chunks knocked out etc.

Interesting, thank you for putting in the leg work for us!

I went with Conti 5 & 6 for my GTS and they were fine but I would have preferred a more closely matched tread pattern, but after the P Zero Neros that it had on, anything was a bonus & a huge improvement

That's a good deal you have got there, be interesting to hear how you get on with them. Out of interest, do you know how many miles the Corsas lasted on your car?

Nice analysis outrun. I am about to have to do the same, I think our cars have similar mileage (10K miles here). My 10 pence worth, that you did not request:
- i will have some favour towards the OEM supplied tyres to keep the clasiche (!!) originality
- i would not let anyone take the wheels of the car unless I was sure they understood not to chip the calipers and not to even touch the ceramic disks. Yes, many workshops hate me.

It will be great to hear how your new tyres work out.

Quick edit: its warm here, 25C + most days I take the car out, and very little rain. Corsa tyres seem sticky, to me.

I'm not fussed about mismatched front to rear

I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to originality
I didn't much like the P Zero's on the Gt/s but still kept replacing them as OEM
Mine has the different tread pattern ones on the front, I think there called AMP?
The rears are std Corsa

Look forward to hearing your views when you get them fitted

Yes, i'm on 10250 miles. They are the 2nd set of Corsas and I've only done 4500 miles or so on mine and the rears are gone already. The Corsa tyre comes with only 7mm of tread depth as standard and so the wear rate is higher because they start with less material, if that makes sense.

I hear what you and FF1078 are saying about originality but the Pirelli compound really is poor and can be pretty scary in the wrong conditions. I did a classic car day last year and when we left it was mid 20s but on route there were hailstones (welcome to Scotland) and the result was terrifying. I figure going with Ferrari spec is close enough and I could hardly be accused of skimping on rubber !!

If you've seen my comments on service costs, that's about to happen too and I've got it down to £1135.80 at the main dealer which is a far cry from the £2600 that they started at. Shows you how much they take the **** out of owners. No excuse for that really.

The Corsa tyres are different treads front to back. I'm sure they have some whizzy engineering reason for this but it doesn't help grip or confidence.

4500 miles for a set of rears is pretty scandalous - I see no reason to stick to Corsas for the sake of originality; safety and better wear wins for me every time

Well done on the reduced service costs too

Outrun, thanks for the update.
How do the Corsas perform in summer, in dry and hot?
I am having a set of rears for the first time, and taking advantage of the climate here (300 days of sunshine per year), i believe they should perform brilliant. Ferrari owners from the US (Florida, Miami etc) claim their performance is very good under equal conditions.

They're fine in the dry and warm. Sticky and confidence inspiring. I'd have no hesitation if the weather suits. Actually, that seems true of most, if not all, Pirelli products that i've owned. I guess they develop them in the south of Italy, nowhere near their northern base !! To be honest, the Corsas are not as bad as the P-zeros that my Ghibli had on it. That was also 21" wheels with no skyhook. I've since been told that the dealers are aware of this and try not to recommend that option. Apparently they are fine with skyhook though. A shame, as the 21s look ace.

She's now shod with Michelin Pilot Super Sport K1 rears and K2 fronts. Already feels more surefooted on normal roads at sensible speeds. I'll report back once i've done a few hundred miles.

The Corsa fronts still have plenty of life so I've kept them. Anybody who needs a set, let me know.

Service booked for 11th May. 3 weeks earlier than Graypaul could manage and for nearly £500 less. The moral of the story is to shop around !!

Torque set to 98nm
Pressures at 32 psi.

Sounds good Athol, look forward to hearing how you get on with them. I'll be needing a set of rubber later in the year so have time to decide who I'll be going with but it's between Michelin and Continental

You can't get Continental in the right sizes Stuart. I'd have been happy with them too. The increased width of the Stradale tyres over the "normal" GT makes them just the wrong side of difficult !!
