As above really, surely this has all the ingredients of a GT great, but they are available for pretty normal loot, especially next to a contemporary E-type FHC for example? £19,950 recently bought a restored low mileage ex-museum car the other day, that's only going one way isn't it?

They do vary quite greatly in price Paco , generally the ones that need tlc or restoration of some kind stay at the lower levels as one would expect , not quite as sort after so prices reflect this , neverless that 4.2 or 4.7 still gives that familiar smile that we all associate with Maserati

Tis a very elegant car. I think that prices are generally on the up as folk look for alternatives. Production numbers will always help in terms of rarity, but they are not an easy rebuild exercise. John Jackson a long term club member sold his Khamsin ( the last chassis number 445) to finance the rebuild of his Mexico. Awesome car and it picked up awards at one of the club events this year.

I suppose it comes down to the person at the time of purchase and what they are willing to pay. Do they wait and hopefully a better example will come along, or do they plunge feet first? (Of course I did the latter when buying my Khamsin)
A couple of project cars have come up on Ebay this last year, mostly USA, and they have not been cheap considering the state they were in. Plus for us in the UK, there are the import costs to add on before even starting the restoration.

Another example on various web sites and also on Ebay was I think the first registered RHD car that was a money pit/ labour of love to get back into decent condition. (was somewhere near Manchester) Not sure what happened to it in the end.

RHD classic Maseratis were never sold in large numbers so every one deserves to be kept going. As Loz says there's a certain smiile that you cannot supress, which a friend of mine observed when I took him out for a quick blast in the Khamsin. Even projects will dry up eventually due to these finite numbers, unless you consider LHD cars.

I think the word I'm looking for to describe the whole experience is..........

Have a look here to see what they ask for good examples;

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/list/30/mexico/

I think one is up for 60K Euros.......

Feelings are Bal that continental prices listed are just there to let you know they expect you to pay through the nose......and are very....very negotiable!

Plus currently the euro is gaining strength by the week and seeming very costly to buy from this side of the channel at the moment.

I hear what you're saying Frank.

Even if it used as a guide price, can't see them dropping it by say 20K. So yeah take it as a guide, but with the poor £ - Euro exchange rate would you guess that a good one in teh UK would be worth around £40K -ish?

Even if you could find a project car here in the UK, the restoration costs would be quite high. For example theres a Ghibli engine on sale on Ebay for $20K with parts, but still requires a rebuild, import costs etc before you can use it.

But then when you do see the results of a restoration, it's usually all worth it.

Thanks for the kind words Paco.

The item certainly sounds like a good buy for 20K. The european buyers would have been very interested as it's a LHD. Never seen one on Ghibli/ Khamsin wheels before, could be period as it's a late one. The way it's described you should have been able to use it as is.

Frank,

It's been up a few times and still not sold. As you say it's near enough £20K with the exchange rate as it is. I like the colour combination, but it would need a full inspection, fancy a trip to Rome?

Body doesn't look too bad in the pictures (but they can flatter as we all know). Wonder how long it's been standing around as it has a lot of dust in the engine bay etc, not good for the head gaskets and such. Interior is gonna need major elbow grease, wonder what the underneath is like.....
