Manual 4200 Thrust Bearing Issue

Quick heads up for anyone that likes to track their manual 4200. Turns out I have a thrust bearing that is leaking brake fluid after being fitted only 2 years ago having covered only 16000 miles in that time. After the Shenanigans at Le Mans last year with the clutch master cylinder I'm taking no chances and about to start ripping the car apart to change the seals on the thrust bearing.

The thrust bearing that is leaking was an unrated unit supplied by Hill Engineering about 2 years ago so I contacted them to report the issue and order up new seals. The guy I spoke to was very helpful and the first question he asked was "do I track the car". I told him I had tracked the car on a number of occasions since fitting their bearing and he advised that the seals in the manual 4200 are made of a different material to that fitted to the thrust bearing in the CC 4200 and therefore cannot cope as well with the high temperatures that can be reached when on track .

This is due to the fact the manual 4200 bearing is operated by brake fluid as opposed to the CC 4200 using hydraulic fluid. Apparently the manual bearing seals are badly affected if the temperature of the bearing reaches 165c whereas the CC seals can cope with much higher temperatures of 230c. The new seals they supply can cope with a modest increase in temperature of 5c but he warned that after a long run on track particularity on a hot day not to park the car up but give it a good cool down period travelling at low speed round the track before coming into pit. When stopped in the pit he also advised to open the bonnet to help let the heat dissipate.

With this in mind I intend to fit a cooling duct into the bell-housing to try and resolve the issue as love tracking the car.

To me Hill Engineering's advice seems good, so thought I would pass it on to any of you lucky phallic symbol equipped 4200 owners. Don't get caught out next time your fiddling with your knob while thrashing round a track!!
