Insurance - not impressed

Not impressed.

Just called Direct Line to change some details on my Kia insurance.

Change of address = 15 quid admin charge. WTF?!

I report an SP30 and say that I will be using my 6 years no claims for another car - premium moves from 250 quid to 1460. WTF?!

The sales rep then had the gall to try to sell me breakdown insurance and home insurance. :strangle:

I can walk away from the quote but I am still fuming at having to pay 15 quid admin charge just to change my details.

I rang RAC to cancel my insurance on the wife's car. £220 charge! It's £160 for the next 5 months insurance, should be illegal. They call it an 'early cancellation fee'. Can't tell you how angry it makes me. I'd rather pay £160 even if I don't have the car!

I used to write & test software for premium finance companies (the people who do the monthly plans for insurance etc), its incredible some of the scams they have going, but they are all legal and in the small print. Not much you can do I'm afraid.

All we can do is vote with our feet (or GBP).

If just one person reads this and does not renew with Direct Line then I will be content.

BTW, people often complain about 'offshore' call centres - well, I rang BT today to solve a tricky problem with my BT Vision box. I got a call back from a helpful Indian lady who was able to solve the issue even when the 'standard' fix, which I had already tried, did not work.
By contrast, of the three onshore reps I spoke to at Direct Line, the second was rude - chastising me for coming through to 'his' department when I had actually been forwarded there by a colleague, and the third was a complete automaton, just reading from the script and making no effort to engage. ("So your quote sir is £1462.80. Would you like to proceed?" "Err, no." "Can I ask why not?" "The premium is nearly the cost of my car." "When is your house insurance due for renewal, sir?" )

I used the insurance company via Supercar hub for my Masser, worked out perfectly. Worth a go?

Why would you pay them anything? I think they would have a hard time enforcing a cancellation fee of that magnitude. I would walk away and change my insurer.
