I've decide to 'stick' for now - only done 500 miles in it! There are currently 8 for sale on Autotrader averaging between £15k & £20k over list - whether anyone will pay that I don't know - delivery is currently estimated around 12 months from order I think.

I will give it 6 months and see how I've got on with it, for now I really like it - just the fuel consumption is somewhat Maserati esq. - but to be expected.

I thought about a Grenadier but servicing and parts is going to be a problem here for a while. So I just pulled the trigger on a Defender, they had a few on the boat here that you could reserve and one of them had more or less the spec I was looking for. My daughter is very exited and I must say I’m quite looking forward to it as well. It should have landed in Durban today so just needs to go through the customs process, checking up at the factory here and then on transport down to the dealer. Still about 3 weeks I think.

I‘m seeing quite a few down here in the Cape, not sure about some of their colours though - light blue is yuck for a bush car.. Looks wise I think they would look a lot better if they were just a touch higher on the wheels. I haven’t seen any other than in town though but I guess it’s early days.

I just went on a trip into the bush/desert with my (new) Defender and I didn’t see any of those either. “Bakkies” as we call Pick-ups here and old style Toyota Landcruisers are more popular, usually kitted out with rooftop tents or towing safari trailers. The Defender did really well, we did some tough low gearing rocky and sandy passes with ease.
