Hi
Got my new 550 brake disks front and rear.
Doing rear brakes first.
Wheel off, calliper off, have even removed the hub nut using special 36mm socket (***** of a job)
Removed two retaining bolts (13mm spanner). Released handbrake and
Expecting disk to wriggle off.

It seems stuck. In fact it 'feels' like the whole brake mechanism wants to pull off.

Do I just yank it off?
Is it worth unwinding the handbrake adjuster?

Why does the manual advise removing the blooming big hub nut ? Seems the disk will just slide off the hub. Grrrrrr

Quite normalish Rob , yeps shouold of release the handbrake adjustment right down before you started but no worries do it now , a few hard hits with a rubber/copper mallet should free things off, if you just pull it your likely to bend/brake the springs holding the shoes together , gently does it and perservere with the wriggling

Thanks Loz
Realised I was in danger of breaking something, so came into the house for cuppa and Forum update. Back on the case now, with tea and flapjack onboard.

Still can't believe I followed the workshop manual and removed that bleeding 36mm hub nut. I am a spanner!

Hi Rob,

When I did my front discs I had a pig of a job getting them off too. Those of a more mechanically kind nature evert your eyes now..

1) Tried tapping with a rubber mallet. No joy.
2) As the discs were being replaced I tried hitting with something more solid.. No joy.
3) Tried wedging the breaker bar between the disc and suspension parts and gave some sharp jolts.. rotated disc 90 degrees.. repeat ad nauseum.. success!.. Discs wriggled free and could be tapped off with mallet.

I can sympathise with your plight!

Oh and why oh why did you take the hub nut off? I've seen what a pig that can be on my Mk1 MX5 I dread to think what it was like on this!! :)

Cheers

Mark

All done now, still need to adjust handbrake though, so brink under wheel :D

Stupid me, followed the manual which advises hub nut removal. Why did I do this?
I even started undoing the roll bar drop link, to get a socket on the caliper bolt. I did remember fairly quickly that a 19mm ratchet ring does the job without undoing drop link.

First side took 4 hours, second side just over one hour.

Thanks to all on this great forum.

Sorry just seen this, yes you need to wind back the adjusted or they won't come off. Beating it with a hammer will break rusted parts, but not for the discs if you can wobble them.

And this for the drop link, in Fig 48

Has anyone managed to undo the drop link, without destroying it?
