Buy the car you love, and fit it into your life.
Your kids will thank you for it later too.

Thank you all so much for your advice and warm welcome!

I'm now in 2 minds really as my head tells me to buy a 4x4 like a Cayenne GTS for a year until the twins are ready for forward facing seats and my heart says to go for the MC Shift from when they're born.

Interms of cars, this will be the only car but it will be more of a weekend car, as I take the tube to work.

Finding the boot dimensions has been hard too, as I need to assess twin stroller sizes!

This is a really tough decision.

+1 on everything bar the wrong advice on GTS gearbox choice!
lol Bob!

The auto is the sensible choice most of the time, but I can tell you that being silly with the F1 box sure feels good for the remainder!

It's possibly technically do-able to fit two rear facing seats in the back, but it'll be very awkward. And the double buggy in the boot won't be easy. And then there's all the other clobber in the early days - sterilisers stuff, nappies, clothes, etc. Life will be hard enough for you and your wife for the first few months, so why make it even harder? Put the flash car idea on the back burner for a few months and get something luxurious, comfy and practical, if only for a while. A Range Rover, a Cayenne, an ML - whatever you fancy. Then get the GT MC later.

Or, as others have said, get the GT, but add another cheapy ever-day hack-about as well.

Having said all that, when my wife and I had our first child, we only had one car. A 6.0lt Diablo!!!! But within two days I'd added a Cayenne to that. A few days after that we got a Punto as well. So, I had my usual two-seater for the Dorset-London commute, my wife had the Punto for nipping about, and the Cayenne was the family wagon for when we needed room for all three of us.

Then I saw the light and realised that a QP does all those jobs in one.

There is no truck on earth would make me walk past that QP. The only minor point might be alcantara seat inserts and small people with sticky hands / car sickness. Full leather is surprisingly indestructible (even cream leather versus dog vomit)

Maybe still get a punto type thing for one of you to bash around the shops.

I think you are the voice of reason Ewan, as you speak to my head and heart!

I think that a 4x4 of some description for 1/2 years followed by a GTS is a good idea.

Last night however I did spot this lovely QP on Nuvola: http://www.nuvolalondon.com/car-details.php?id=692

Indeed - let us spend your money! Get the QP GTS for now, it is a decent stopgap car ;)

He has a pair of MC shift, both AWESOME colours.
(nero carbonio with Avorio leather)
(grigio graniot with bordeaux )

That is the best idea ever. Perfect. Though I see the QP is still showing as for sale. Advice this good should be acted on fast. Hurry up and buy it before someone else does. It's gorgeous.

Definitely need to act fast as that's a lovely car and I have started some man maths about trading the Merc and GT in for the QP as making good economic sense...... Only joking;)

Well I've got another 6 months before the babies arrive so I plan on keeping my Vantage until a month before they're born!
The insurance renewal is conveniently in August too, so that's when the switch will be made.
Gives me time to enjoy the Aston a bit more into the summer.

I heard a GTS yesterday, and the sound is intoxicating so I'm really looking forward to the change.

As this is a thread mostly about children and squeezing them into Masers, I have a brand new unused Maserati child seat if anyone wants to make me an offer - It would be no good for a newborn - more toddler up to 6yo but full head restraint, Isofix etc and Maserati logo, just like Daddy's seat!!! I should say be wary if you have a GTS as this will not fit the bucket of the seat in the rear. I suspect it's more aimed at the QP market.
