Granturismo 4.2 Exhuast Note Options

So ever since I drove a 4.7, I was in love with the ferocious crackle and pop emitted on down shifts.

Hard acceleration was superb as well.

So my question to the knowledgeable owners here is, what is the best exhaust system to try and replicate this with the 4.2?

Or am I ultimately wasting time and better off just waiting to get a 4.7 than trying to tune a 4.2 for better sound.

Am aware of Larini. My independent mechanic also mentioned "Rainbow" exhausts.

Have heard a Larini 4.2 GT on Youtube and sounds good.

Any suggestions welcome. Assuming big dollars to change over...

Larini is the prefered choice from what I can gather and yes big money...got to be looking at £2000 I would say for back boxes maybe even more.............Never heard of Rainbow....

Personally I'd wait and buy a 4.7.....it's a TOTALLY different car experience, not just the exhaust.
Save your cash and put it towards the deficit.

Lozzingers is swapping a stock exhaust for a Larini system on his 4.2 today I gather... ...

Look out for a post and see how he gets on..

I had same dilemma with my 4.2, but didnt want to be too boy racerish, my other cars do that, as without considerable expense we can not control any valves.
Despite people suggesting it would make little difference i opted to go with larini x pipe (the louder one) and it transformed the sound. The car has lost a little of its melodic tone but is quite alot louder and the cracks and pops on the overun are very much pronounced.
At least with this route its more insurance friendly and if not sufficient you can upgrade to rear boxes and sport cats, although i am happy with mine now

Hi Classico,
I have the 4.2 (Fangio's ex mistress!) and as he says I've just had the Larini (non valved) back boxes installed yesterday. in a word BRILLIANT!!! I didn't do any research into them - I just test drove a second hand 4.2 which had them on and new that it was essential to me. Inside the car I just couldn't here the engine as standard. I'm sure the 4.7's are great, but they're just out of budget for me so didn't need to worry about them!
The difference is sublime, and windows down or up the noise is superb, with a dirty crack/pop from 1st to 2nd and when lifting off too, supreme difference.
The noise is louder at low rpm's and above about 2.5k it really sounds just beautiful. Still sounds amazing - just you can now hear inside what other people could hear outside - and it's louder outside of course. I've been through Godalming High Street in 1st gear, don't care what people think, there are lots of buildings on either side and it's great. Just do it is what I say :)
I've driven a tank's worth in the car now and love it :)

Sounds very impressive! Exactly what I'm after!

Need to search more Youtube videos of 4.2s with the Larini exhaust.

As you say, the crackle and pop sound is what attracts me, not so much a louder exhaust note, so that's what I'm after.

Will PM for further details.

Assuming the Sport button now effectively doesn't do anything as the valves are always open?

Thanks again all.

Classico,
Go and see the Mille Miglia guys, they are in Sydney. A couple of guys here in Perth have their rear boxes fitted to 4.2 GT's and they sound EPIC! They make the 4.2 sound like the 4.7 and they'll be a fair bit cheaper than Larini as well.
Cheers

welcome anytime Fangio :) though I don't think it's quite as loud as yours when you revved it in Reading the other day!!

PS Classico - as far as I am aware the sport button does nothing on the 4.2's anyway in terms of exhaust noise - it just stiffens the suspension, sharpens the throttle response and changes down a gear (or two!) - if you get the Larini with the valved optioned exhaust you need to also get a separate key fob type thing which has an open/close button on it for the exhausts. Happy to be corrected if any of the above is not true...

I think you are spot on with that.... given mine a good work out over the weekend... bit too much motorway mind... can't wait to hear "The Growler of Godalming"....

What's it like on a long run.. I must say I got a bit weary of the drone on mine on the Mway.. suck it in quiet mode for most of the time - which was the right thing to do...

I've only done an hour at a time so far - and since I'm in the honeymoon period it's not a problem! My wife will be the first to notice as she doesn't like drone in cars. We could still have a conversation/listen to your (interesting) taste in music so so far it's great! Up a hill if it changes down a gear I do notice it being slightly quieter - but then I accelerate just to hear it!
Hindhead tunnel on the A3 had me in 3rd gear from 40-70-40-70 and it was epic!

I bet that's great !.... and listen... Most of that (interesting) music was the previous stewards.... and whilst I quite liked the Seal, Duffy and Bobby Womack I think the rest could do with being deleted... I will own up to the Aynsley Lister and the Royal Blood tho..

So far as my exhaust note goes... it's not so much the howl under acceleration that I'm enjoying its the crackles and pops as you slow down and the unmistakable "Woofle" of the V8 pootling through town....

They really are a joy to listen to. I like the almost mournful noise under gentle acceleration and with the revs rising through 2.5 - 3.5k, and the riotous howling under hard throttle and up towards the red line. And the hooligan, snaps, crackles and bangs on the overrun are tremendous. Can't imagine I'll ever get bored of it.
