Eurospares - careful with postage costs!

Just a little warning to anyone buying small items from Eurospares. When you buy an item it lets you select from some postage/courier options. However, their software obviously does some rudimentary screening of the order, so not all of these options are always available – if you see what I mean. This makes sense, in theory.

I bought six camber shims (about this size of a 50p piece, but only 0.5-1mm thick). Bizarrely the website only gave me the option of UPS courier, however I wasn't too concerned as the website states that these are estimated costs and that 'shipping costs will be calculated by us upon receipt of your order. Shipping cost are dependent on the weight, size and destination of the package'.

Guess what….my six tiny shims turned up in a large UPS bag. Inside the large UPS bag was a small envelope weighing less than 28g! Obviously ridiculous for anyone with any sense to send this by UPS at a cost of £9.34....based on the Royal Mail postage charts on Eurospares website, anything up to 100g would be £3.39.

I know it's only a few £, but it more than doubled the overall cost and this was the second time it had happened….I just let it go the first time. What I found most disappointing was that when I contacted Claudio he firstly didn't take the time to understand the problem and was generally unhelpful (even though I sent a screen print of the page) and then he didn't reply when he'd eventually grasped what I was explaining. I wasn't fussed about any refund, I was just flagging a website glitch….would hate to have to deal with them on any serious problem though! I was really quite disappointed by this.

I know that Eurospares has a good reputation on the forum, but at the same time I know this is a forum where people can speak freely. If anyone has this problem when ordering small items, I suggest you phone up and order instead. However, for me, Claudio's response has dissuaded me from using them again – I've spent quite a lot of money recently and actually learned that some items are the same or cheaper from main dealers anyway, and on other items a significant saving on Eurospares prices can be gained by shopping round.

I think Nigw if a problem is raised in good faith then any retailer is duty bound to acknowledge and act on it.

If it seems that when you go to order you are presented with a "RYANAIR" type list of seemingly negative or contradictory information then thats not at all helpful.

Given the size and small weight of the item, then they should clearly state maximum postal costs making it clear that if you need it quickly then you can pay extra.

There are principles involved and whether you paid 50p extra or £6....it was a cost which you shouldn't have incurred.

It has been stated in the past that Eurospares are not always cheapest.....you do need to shop around, as some dealers will price match or better, plus the odd indie!

Cheers - it was really just the principle of it; no excuse for poor customer service! There was no difference in the delivery time, it was just that the system automatically 'decided' that the tiny order warranted the full courier service, and then whoever actioned the order didn't have the common sense to correct it, despite the website intimating this would happen. And, as I mentioned, not a one off.

Re shopping around, a good example last week was on an original Sachs three piece clutch kit for my 3200 - price at Eurospares approx £630, so I bought the exact same kit from Eurocarparts £468 (listed at £520 on their wesbite, but even cheaper when I called!). Approx 25% saving...£170!

I've never found Eurospares to be much good. They take forever to answer the telephone and have never called me back when they assured me they would. I think their customer service is amongst the worst of any I've ever experienced. Their attitude comes across as extremely arrogant. They've never been the cheapest for any parts I've enquired about either. I bought a set of Maserati OEM mats from them when I first bought my 3200 & didn't know better. They took ages to arrive and postage charges were criminal. I subsequently discovered I could have bought them from a main dealer for less. Unless absolutely nobody else had what I needed I wouldn't ever bother with them - they don't deserve to take my hard-earned from me.

I always tell them to put such small items in the first class post, and they dont even charge me for it, worth remembering for next time.

Have to agree their postage charges can be outrageous.
I asked them to split an order, send the bigger bits that were in stock now and put the small bits in the post when they came in.
Made it quite clear I was in no hurry for these small bits, so ordinary post would be fine.
The small bits arrived in oversize box by courier - the bits inside weighed about 200g - courier cost £10.97. (the same as the charge for the earlier large package)

Sent the same box back via royal mail for £2.50

For the same courier cost I sent my 2 front shocks to Bilstein and that package was 11 kg.

some companies really sting you on the p&p bit and half the time its laziness on their part.

Conaero, as they are so well know and a sponsor, can you raise this particular issue with them?

Just quoting from their advert........

"Quite simply, we can help source and supply the part you are looking for – absolutely whatever it may be – quickly, efficiently and above all else, expertly. We have three methods of meeting your exact requirements and they are all designed – with the correct people and processes in place – to ensure your complete satisfaction:

1. The provision of new and used parts. (Our current resource holds in excess of 20,000 sq ft of stock and inventory; 12,000 of which is dedicated to new and original pieces.)
2. Remanufacturing of components.
3. Dismantling for parts.

Even if you are unsure of what you precisely need, we are just a phone call away. We’ll be absolutely thrilled to assist because it’s what we sincerely enjoy doing and it’s all part of our core service.

At Eurospares you’ll soon discover that we always put you, the customer, very firmly in the driving seat. Each and every time.

I've also suffered from postage issues / lack of promised call backs etc. I think it's fair to say their customer service to "joe public" could be improved... it does smack a little of arrogance. That said, I've generally found them a very good resource (stock / part numbers / web diagrams etc) - strikes me they must have very little competition!
