DVLA Charges

I moved house 18 months ago and being a good citizen I sent off my license for a change of address took a week or so and was FREE

I told my 3 daughters to do the same (and my wife who still has the paper version!) of course in true sibling fashion, non of them bothered until the youngest was questioned by the boys in blue.
Being a technophobe they want to do it on-line, this service now COSTS £60!

Is it true to change your address the government now charges to change your license details - and can fine you (£1000) if you don't?

I am not sure how this would stack up in court (a loss probably) but it does not seem fair to me.

Incidentally the plastic photocard has a run out date as well - if this is out of date its a another fine from HMG. apparently a little known fact in the UK, but loved by the garlic crunchers as its an excuse to impound British cars and send unwary British drivers to a penal colony in French Guinea

I'm hanging on to my old style one as long as I possibly can because there is a charge for renewing the credit-card sized one which has to be done at intervals. Not only is that inconvenient (yes, many will forget) but doubtless the charge will only ever spiral upwards.

Also rental companies demand to see both parts of the new license so you have two bits of stuff to remember to take with you.

The old style one does provoke raised eyebrows at rental desks but as long as it is still legal I'm hanging onto it.

I remember being stopped by two Gardaí in Dublin in the '80s (making a bit too much progress on the Stillorgan dual carriageway) and when they examined my license they were incredulous that it is valid until twenty-thirty-something, in those days the 2000s seemed so far away as to be science fiction. Irish licenses of the time were something like only three years validity - another tax raising scam.

Con Con Con
One phone call to DVLA and this is a scam - there is NO CHARGE to change your address or even other details.
Because of 'clever' internet you can get sent to very official looking websites so beware please,
I nearly got caught out trying to pay the congestion charge - true cost is £10 but you can pay £12 on a vey official website
I hate these scams

What a sickner........if its so very close to a real site, then the DVLA should do the decent thing and refund your money!
