Driver Training Courses?

Hi,

Other than the wet handling day, I was wondering if anyone had done any other driver training courses? I'm not just talking about speed awareness, but skids, evasive action, high speed control etc.

I know Maserati offer driver training, but Italy is a little too far to travel!

Just wanted to know if anyone had been on any of these courses and if so what they thought/would recommend.

Cheers

Hi Bud, I've done most training courses that are out there,
There are a lot within the uk so no need to travel all the way to Italy.
If your relatively new to the courses can I suggest you look at
Advanced driver training before you look at evasive, defensive, and aggressive driver training
Check out The institute of advanced motorists (IAM) for a good starting point.
http://www.iam.org.uk/

Evasive and Defensive driving skils are two different types of driving and should not be confused although most companys will offer one or the other type, you will find that they are actually only offering evasive driving. It is rare for a company to offer proper defensive driving and you will find it is Specalist, military or "government" departments that will teach it.

Thanks all - I will have a look at those

If anyone has personal experience of a course, that would be great.

Thanks

Hi

If of use our friend is a former Kent Police driving instructor and current instructor. Area Surrey and Mid Sussex but would travel by negotiation. If anyone wants extra driving skills and would like a chat with her let me know.

Personally I'd recommend the mad welshman himself - Andy Walsh - carlimits.com. I've done quite a lot with him and he's improved my car control no end. Basically he teaches from first principles of car dynamics and balance at slow speed progressing up to high speed bends where he takes you through how to handle the car on the absolute limit. So long as your car has a low centre of gravity (dont turn up in a fiat panda or he's likely to have a breakdown :)) theres little chance of anything going wrong as theres loads of space. You end a standard day with high(ish) speed work round a short cone course.

He's very good at instructing, patient and it's virtually all practical teaching - no sitting in a class room for an hour before you start. I found that one of his four person days was enough one-to-one tuition but if you need more he does do two-to-one as well. Probably a good way for most to start. He'll find out quite quickly what standard of driving you're at and adapt to suit.

He also runs activity days - basically a whole bunch turn up and try to out do each other over the course exercises - great fun, maybe we should try to organise one with him. Very popular with the lotus crowd.

Yep, Walshy.
Four of us did a day with him. Learnt lots and lots of fun.
Oh yes, he told us above the Panda, and also the new Range Rover and body guards...they should have listened to him..ouch!

Was there the day after the day of the Panda. Forever now known as PandaLimits :) The lad involved had been given the day by his father to try to clam him down as he'd already written off two cars.

Another vote for Walshy.

Done a couple of 4 person days with him and a few 25 person activity days. The first lesson I learned was that I was no where near as good as I thought I was! Plus seeing as the OP is in N London he's only up the road at North Weald.
